2004 Silhoutte Temp Gauge Problem

The coolant temperature gauge is erratic. Sometimes, it appeas to be functioning normally. Most times, it is indicating very high and or off the scale (needle pointing straight down). Always, even when off the scale, the range of movement seems to rise and fall as is typical of increases and decreases in coolant temperatures. In no case does it appear that I'm overheating. Any suggestions?
