I had a fire under the hood of my 81 v8 chevy truck, The damage delt seems to be the distributor cap, plug wires, a majority of the wire harness along the firewall which seems to be mostly running the windsheild wipers and heat and air assembly, also my alternator wires are burn't. The carb looks ok even though the air filter was charred I think I can just clean it or even rebuild it. I have a new dist. and wires. also the radiator wasnt even touched. So I am wondering what all I need to run the engine on the bare neccessitys for the time being so I can drive it to my house. I know I shouldnt need much I trashed the heat and air housing box next to the motor(melted), so now im gonna rip out all the wires that are not associated with the engine. I believe if I rewire the alternator, hook up the new dist. and wires then the carb and fuel lines it should run. Im sort of new on this type of thing so anyone got any ideas?
(p.s do I have to mess with my ignition switch or starter wires or any other main functions. or do i just get rid of all the not needed wires making sure theres nothing hot and leave starter and ignition wires the way they were?)

Were you able to to get it going? Sounds like you covered most critical items. Any fuel & vacuum lines could be important details.

I'm guessing this is a 350? And it sounds like you want to keep the truck! Why not, just go down to your local salvage yard, and cut away all needed wiring harnesses and then just splice them back together!! Sounds like a good day job!!! Plus; those good old trucks are plentiful, so there should'nt be a problem finding one. Just a Thought! Good Luck!
