Instrument Problem

I have a 2003 Ford Focus 2.0L Auto.
The instrument panel loses ALL vision intermitently. Loss of fuel guage, speedo, rev-counter etc. They flash on and off with no warning.
There is no pattern to the problem it can happen at the turn of the ignition key or just as you are driving along. Sometimes it cans be weeks (2or3) between this misbehaviour.
My concern is speed limits, or at least sticking to them.
Has anyone had this problem or could someone assist before I go nuts?
