weak air flow for heat/ac

My car is a 91 ciera w/3.3 engine w/ac.
Iam not sure, but my guess is a weak blower motor? At position 1, hardly any flow and pos. 4 feels like 2 should. Also, at pos. 1 I can hear a chirping noise (rubbing?) and at pos.4 the motor is loud but not near enough output as mentioned.

I tried to remove the blower motor, but could not because the power steering pump/res is in the way. Autozone is no good for this since it only mentions the 3.1 and says to remove the alternator??? I have the service manual, but it only says to simply remove it in one step! ya right...has anyone done this? is there a trick?

What symptoms would there be if the resistor was not up to specs?

I would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

Welcome to AF.

You will most likly have to remove the power steering pump partially.

I would say its probly your blower motor thats bad.
When the resistors are bad you dont have 1-3 or 4 just high which is 12v.

Test for power at the plug connectors and see if voltage varys, if it does on the different selections then the resistors working.

This all should be mentioned in your service manual.

I had a 91 Cutlass Ciera with a 3.3 and replaced the fan motor. I recall that I managed to get just enough space so that I could undo the nut holding the fan onto the motor. Then I managed to get the fan removed from the motor. This allowed me to pull out the motor and then the fan (I think). In any case, I got a new motor and managed to install the fan onto the motor and then put everything back in OK.
I've been told that for some operations, it's easier to tilt the engine forward to get at things than to start pulling things apart!
Good luck.
John
