Need help trying to replicate headlight rings - Ferrari 250 GTO.

I just got my hands on a Gunze Sangyo Ferrari 250 GTO. I am so happy to build this kit as it looks really involved. But as this was an Ebay purchase the owner did not know if any parts were missing. Well, there are a few missing but I can handle it except for the headlight rings. I know that the kit parts were etched metal, but I cannot think about how to redo these like the kit. I have seen many built versions here that had the original kit rings. I need to know if any of you have an idea as to how I can replicate them. I really appreciate anyones time in helping me.

Thanks, Jon :(

You can carefully go around the edge of the light cover with chrome paint....or make a pattern using masking tape and then cut them out of Bare Metal Foil.

Dang I forgot about BMF, that sounds like a great match. Thank you for the great idea. I guess what I might ask next is does anyone have this kit and could they possibly make a photocopy or pic of the rings maybe? Again, thanks for the help.

you can also buy them from here (http://www.stradasportsstore.com/shop-bin/sc/productsearch.cgi)..
it also comes with an etch for the shift gate and all for under $5.

in the mean time, I'll dig out my kit and scan them for you.

Darn I got all excited but the link was bad. Can you tell me where you were headed with it as I have searched for any parts to buy. Edit:I saw the link was directed to StradaSports. I searched on that site with no luck though. Maybe I should email Kevin?!

Thank you for taking the time to scan the light rings.

The RM part number for the set with the headlight rings is:
RM-11 1/24 Ferrari 250 GTO Detail Set

You are the man in more ways than one. Thanks for your time.

Might I also trouble you for an idea on era specific tires that would accompany the build? I only have three and they look pretty bad IMO. Can I kitbash anything modern with a better tread pattern/realism to them?

Thank you DM!

Stradasports has the tires for the kit from R&M of MD too, I found searching for 250 GTO seemed the best way to find them :)

can't think of anything off the top of my head that is period and cheap.

I'll have to dig through my kits to see what cars of that period have decent tyres. You might be able to get away with using the ones from the fujimi daytona kit but they'll be incorrect michelin xwx when they should be dunlops.
The borranis in the gunze kit also look too small and definitely too narrow.

I know that a very good set of wheels and tyres are also available from stradasports made by tecnomodel (http://www.stradasportsstore.com/Tecnomodel.html) but $40 is no small sum for wheels and tyres.
Model Factory Hiro's wheels and tyres are also available.

R&M has a set of dunlops and wheels for the Racing Jaguars but if my memory serves me correct, the Jaguars ran on 16" (at least the D-Type did), whereas the GTO was on 15"s. You might want to check up on that.

Jon,

Check out ths months TMMI, as Alex Kustov had the same problem on his Ex Models 275. He stuck two blades together packed with a plastic card spacer to cut the rims out with a parallel thickness - I thought it's a neat trick.

I'm not sure which GTO kit the R&M surrounds are supposed to fit, they've been around forever.

Yep, I made the rings from plastic as described here:

Didn't know the article in TMMI was already out - haven't seen it yet!

Ah, back now?

RMoM makes some terrific stuff, but their stuff can be a challenge to find. they're practically local for me and still they take some patience to get ahold of. But they clearly love the 250, as they put out some terrific detail sets for it (like engines- pricey yet beautiful). I think I've got a catalog w/ email and phone number if you want to go through them directly.

For tyres, American Satco put out a good set of early 15" Pirelli P7s. Not sure if they're quite period correct for the original date of manufacture, but they'd probably look fine on it.

Congrats on the Mod status there Andy. It is deserved.

As far as back, well, I never left, just lurking always. I do love it here, but I have learned that my ideas are not like others. That seemingly caused waves here and I can admit it was good and bad. I guess an internet forum is not what I perceive it to be in my head. Therefore it will never be like I want it. Once I realized that I got over my hopes of making some miraculous breakthrough about what I had issues about; I stayed behind without talking anymore. Not that I had to or was told to, but because I wanted to learn more about the site.

I have learned too, and that is good. AF is not a place to be insecure about what we do, or feel attacked when a mod tells us what we should have known. AF is about modeling (and a thousand other forums). Maybe someday when I rule the world things will be my way, lol.

You all rock, and I can honestly say that the treatment lately has been great. I have been noticing the growth as well, and that is another reason to love this forum.

As for the 250, I was thinking of the R & M pieces until someone had mentioned they may not be exact. Alex's approach is do-able and seems to be the way. I will try and print out DM's pic and combine the two.

Thanks for all the help guys. :smooch:

For the tires and wheels i'd go for MFH GTO wheel set:

http://www.hlj.com/product/MFHP923

I have a couple of sets of RMoM Dunlop tires, but they don't fit even on Gunze wheels, their inside diameter is too small. Otherwise they are great though.

Thanks, Jon.

Glad to hear you that feel like you've learned a bit. Hopefully it will help you enjoy the forum more, and get more out of being here.

for what it's worth, I have a feeling that the RMoM GTO detail might be a copy of the gunze PE parts.

Damn you all and your help!!!!! LOL

I might as well order the ones listed above and see if they fit. If not, then I make them like Alex, and BMF them. Either way, I have ways to do it now. Thank you all again for the help.

p.s. I'm Back!!!

Hi, DM. The link doesn't work. I've been trying to find a source for 1/24 and 1/43 parts. Had my hopes up!
