banging noise

Hi
Driving 93 Buick Centry and when i came to red light i started to hear a banging noise under hood. As i accelerate the noise can not be heard. When i arrived at home i popped the hood and i could hear the noise near the belt......while holding gas to it the noise is gone and when appling the brake the noise increases. I dont know much as far as what it could be....thanks for the help.

No mention of what engine, please get used to providing the required info, thanks. I would take the belt/s off and see what happens.
