I got a crane cams cam kit. came with cam, lube, springs,retainers..but it doesnt come with oil shields. The piece that fits over and around the top of the valve spring. The one's that are on the engine now dont fit the new retainers.
So what do these oil shield do( other than what the name implies) ? And is it necessary? I would think that if it was Crane would of sent them...
Any insight would be greatly helpful
Thank
John

John,
IF you have positive valve stems seals (they "clamp" over the guide boss), there's no need for the shields. We leave them out of all but "pure" restorations. Dead weight with no gain... If you don't have the seals, you're going to have oil issues, as the Crane retainers won't like the "O" rings, either.
Pioneer sells a seal "OS-938", that will fit tightly over the guide boss.
