ignition cylinder won't come out

2002 Buick Regal LS

So I've had some problems and according to a lot of smart people on this forum, it's the ingition switch, which according to some people is a common problem with my kind of car. I've got all the neccessary information I think I need to get the job done and I got the part. I got the tilt knob out, taken the bottom and top covers off the steering column (yeah, I got ahead of myself and broke a few latches on the top, but I'll live).

Anyway, I'm told to put the key in and turn it to run. Then I should see a little hole somewhere and I stick a small allen wrench in there and the ignition cylinder should slide out.

I know this is going to sound stupid and I'm probably gonna kick myself in the butt after I get it out of there, but can someone elaborate on this procedure?
Am I looking on the black covering on the outside of the cylinder for the hole?
Am I looking in the little valley between the steering colum and the black covering for the hole?
Am I supposed to be looking (with the key in run mode) on the top, front, bottom or back?
Does the hole have a little gold plate on top of it? If so, do I push on this plate or move it out of the way and push inside the hole?
My concern is that I might screw something up that will cause the cylinder to not read the key resistor and if that happens, I'd probably just sit down and have a good cry for awhile. A long while. I'm not far from it right now.

I know this is probably pretty stupid, but I've been fighting with this thing for almost two hours now and I'm about to throw things across my room that cost a whole lot.

Relax. Best thing to do is be patient and take your time. There are some minor deviations since you have a 2002 model from the base procedure provided. See link below.

Okay, I may have been exagerating about how angry I was for entertainment purposes...

I actually have that post printed out already and tried using it to no good conclusion. The only hole I found on top is in the little valley (which is the actual cylinder) and its covered by a small rectangular brass/copper plate of somekind. I was thinking of simply trying to force through it, but with this whole resistor on the key thing, didn't want to screw anything up.
There is also a plastic covering over the housing that the cylinder goes into. I was thinking that the hole might be under it, but I can't get that off either to check.
Before I break anything (not in anger), can anyone be more specific as to which/where the hole is?

Okay...got it. For those who have never taken an ignition cylinder out and have about the same car as me, there is a black plastic piece that wraps all the way around the housing. I cut it off and found the hole under it.
