The 1.8 L from the 91-96 GT would be an easy fit into your car, but remember you have to change the tranny and wiring as well. The 1.8 is a much more practical engine to work on, since the 1.9 will not yield great results to tuning, and not much can be done. Turbo kits for the 1.9 are being experimented with at the moment, but a turbo 1.8 (which you can buy at www.corksport.com) will give you 200+ hp right out of the box with light boost, and I have even heard of 500+ hp turbo 1.8's.

Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. :)

Dude, thqnks for your response. What about the 1.9 HO from an 88 w/ 5 spd on ebay? Acutally i think i want an entire car. Are any year motors preferable? What about brakes? and will 15" tires fit? Are "GT" motors found in any LXs - didnt they have a sport model? I am thouroughly satisfied w/ my escort @ 250k . It still cranks and burns no oil. :smoka: Just lookin down the road. Hey will this thing take a trailer hitch?

I'm not all too familiar with 1st gen Escorts (up to '90) but the engines were always being refined, so the 1.9 from your car would be a more advanced version of the '88's 1.9. The 2.0 in 3rd gen ('97-'00) Escort LX's is actually the same 1.9 with a stroke increase and other minor refinements. As for GT engine's in LX's, there was an LX-E offered sometime between '93 - '96 (I think...don't quote me) that had the same 1.8 as the GT. The best Escort engine is, of course, the 2.0 Zetec found in ZX2's.
Some GT's had 15" 7 spoke wheels that I love an plan on getting, others had a twisted 5-spoke 15". Either wheel will fit your car perfectly.
I have seen Escorts with trailer hitches before, but I would check the manual or talk to the local trailer hitch guys about it first. :D
