headlight chime/warning

i have a 1990 535i and my wife has left the headlights on 3 times now, draining the battery and making it difficult to get back in due to lockout. I now know how to get back in but can anybody tell me how to engage the chime which tells me the headlights are on. Is this a fuse, a jumper, a relay. I'm confused.
