need some guidance please

Ok guys. Heres the deal. My first 2 cars were 91 and 92 DSM's. Both has 1.8 motors in them. I always wanted a turbo but couldnt get it. Now thats changed but I have a few questions. Please dont flog me if these are old, I have done some searching around here and on wiki.

I have a guy with a 96 eclipse 2.0 non-turbo that I am looking at buying. I want to turbo the car but I found out its not a good idea because the motor is a dodge motor?

As far as I can tell I need a 4g36 (is that it?) engine to make it a turbo? I can only get that motor for already turbo DSM from 95-99?

Or from what I understand all 90-94 DSMs that had 2.0 engines were the 4g36 motors?

So to make a non-turbo DSM into a turbo one that will work correctly I need a 2.0 from either a 90-94 or a 2.0 turbo from a 95-99?

Again sorry if I sound like a fool. Please let me know if what I understand is correct and if not please correct me. Thanks for your time.

From what i have always been told, don't quote me, it is better to get the 4G36 engine for turbo'ing, well turbo upgrading (already turbo'd) (GST, GSX), but i have also seen some pretty nice and quick 420A's (GS) that were turbo'd. There was a discussion recently about this and what i got out of it is that it is going to cost you about 2-3K to turbo the 420A so that it is pushing out about the same HP as a slightly modded 4G36 engine that is already turbo'd..... if thats wrong someone please correct me.

You will also have to tune the 420A just so that it can be turbo'd and run correctly, but I really dont know a ton about that...still learning...

I have a 420A in my 97' GS, and its a pretty nice motor, its pretty quick, and it has some balls for only pushing out around 140HP stock.:)

What it comes down to is this...

Can I take ANY 2.0 out of a first gen (90-94) and turbo it just fine? (because all first gen DSM's with a 2.0 used the 4g36?)

Mitsubishi used the 4g63 in all their turbo eclipse. There is no 4g36. You CANT put a 4g63 motor in your car unless you want to spend an ass of money for no real gains. If you want a fast car either turbo the 420a or buy a different car. Those are your options.

I think theres a bit of confusion here still, but this should help. For starters, you cannot swap in any other motor into your 420a except for another 420a, either from a 2.0 Dodge Avenger (95-98), or from a n/t 2.0 Talon ESI (95-98). The reason being is that the motor sits opposite of the 4g63 (420a=motor on passenger side, tranny on driver side, 4g63=motor on drivers side, tranny on passenger side). The cost to actually try and do this swap is going to be upwards of $5000 and will take more of your time than you probably want to put into this car.

Secondly, like Silvr said, ALL of the factory turbocharged DSMs (90-99) came with the 4g63(T), but mitsu also produced a non-turbo'd 4g63 in the 90-94 2.0 NT cars, but it came with weaker piston-rod combos and also did not come with oil-squirters. And then there's also the 1.8 motor, but meh...who cares about those.

Now when you say the 90-94 models have 4g63 motors in them but they are weaker does that mean I cant turbo those?

Will the stock turbos bolt on? Will it be ok if you run lower boost on it?

You "can" turbo them, but why would you want to? All you'd have to do is find a different piston/rod combo, swap them in, and then turbo it. The 4g63T and 4g63 blocks are almost identical, so yes, you can turbo a n/t 4g63 block, but I would definitely recommend at least putting in some stock turbo internals.

I am keeping a eye out for a already turbo DSM that way I can just start in the middle. How hard is it to get a 1'st or 2'nd gen turbo DSM to 250HP?

If it can be done with bolt-ons and tuning then I will be uber happy ^^

It can be done just with bolt ons and no tuning.

4G63 is turbo! :screwy: and a boosted 420A would be awesome! need more people like that, build your deam... dont buy it! ;) you'll love it way more if you build it yourslef! :2cents:

Not all 4G63's were turbo. See post #7.

But only the 1gen's came with the n/t 4g63. The 2gen's got the 420a.... Aren't we so lucky
