Looking for better towing power

I am looking for a way to help my truck tow better. It is a 92 f150 with 106,000 miles, auto tranny and towing package. Truck has plenty of get up and go. But when towing it lacks the power. Almost seems that if the tranny shifted differently it would help. I have to really hammer the gas to get it to downshift going uphill. Anyone got any suggestions?
