I just bought a 1997 Wrangler with the 2.5. I got a great deal from the dealer I knew and he said the o2 sensor needed to be replaced. I put 15 gallons in it when I left and within 60 miles I was halfway through the tank. I replaced both o2 sensors and the spark plugs and the things rides great. No chugging but it is still sucking gas and like the thread a few days ago, at idle it smells like a have a gasoline air freshener. When it idles and I give it gas it shoots black smoke out of the exhaust and leaves a ton of black soot on the ground. Im not an advanced machanic but maybe the problem isn't too major.

It is running way too rich!... and if that wasn't obvious, u may need a technical answer from the pros. Wow I have only heard of this from diesels! It needs to be leaned out, but unfortunately I don't know what would do that for a Jeep yet (cheaply).

Check fuel pressure, sounds like the fuel pressure regulator may be no good. And the injectors may be stuck open due to the increse in fuel pressure

Also take a look at the intake, if it's really clogged then it could affect the sensors. Make sure you have a new air filter.

With that amount of richness, I'd definitely take it to an Advance Auto or Autozone and have them put their diagnostic on it.

For the record, my 97 Wrangler with the 2.5 got 17mpg everywhere.

Take it back to the dealer and have them fix it quick. It sounds like muliple problems
