ST27 Peugeot 908 WIP

Hold on to your hats ladies and gents, we're diving right into this one. I just got this kit earlier this week from Stradasports and couldn't wait to get started. This is the first ST27 kit I have built.
One strange thing I noticed was that no where on the box or instructions does it say 'Peugeot 908', but only says '908'. There are a few 'Peugeot' markings on the decal sheet, but that's it. Guess they didnt wait for any licensing procedures to hold things up?
The panel lines look good. The castings are really clean, with minimal flash. The chassis pan was slightly warped on my kit, but a little steam fixed that. There is more white metal parts than I would like, but what are you going to do?
The fenders are cast separate to aid in fitment of a few parts that span the gap between the fenders and the body. There are locating pins on the parts and holes on the body. In some reference pics I have, there is a distinct separation line between these parts and the body, but not at the fender, so I glued the parts to the fenders instead of the body. I also need to figure out how to fill the gap around the bottom edge of the fenders at the chassis pan, as there should not be a separation line there.

Ken, great to see some more of your work so soon
I look forward to seeing more of your work on this kit, especially since I am still undecided over whether to get one myself.

Awesome project. I will follow this one closely (I already ordered my kit :licka:).
Are you going to CF the whole body? What No. will you be building 7 or 8?

Super subject! Great to see it being tackled by a master. I share your sentiments about the white metal - something that will scare me away from this and other Japanese multimedia kits.

Cleaned up some white metal parts and attached a few:

Naturally, some putty was used before priming.
http://images27.fotki.com/v1019/photos/8/829155/5464370/Peugeot90809a-vi.jpg
The brass rods came in the kit, but I mounted endplates on them for easier handling. These parts will be painted before assembling them.
http://images22.fotki.com/v757/photos/8/829155/5464370/Peugeot90808a-vi.jpg
I have started painting the parts. I will put a black basecoat on before decaling with CF. The white top must be painted and I decided to paint the narrow red stripe on the body, and use the decals for the other graphics. I will use Tamiya paints, with TS49, bright red, being a close, but not perfect match to the red on the decals. I think it will work, as the red stripe on the body will not be too close to any red decals. My reference pics shows the carbon weave pattern to be a simple weave on the body and twill weave everywhere else. I'll tone down the twill weave decals with Alclad smoke. I'll use ST27 carbon kevlar decals inside the fenders.

Interesting project and - as I read your paintment plans a very ambitious project as well. IŽd like to see the results of the paint job and CF-ing. Keep things up and good luck!
P.S.: Those back air intakes look massive...I guess form follows function!

I'm very curious how this will turn out. Looking forward the CF application. The absence of the CF compared to the price is what kept me away from getting it. It looks like a nice kit nonetheless.

Been working on decals. I should have bought stock in Microscale industries, makers of Microsol.
The two front fenders have just been decaled. The chassis has been toned down with Alclad smoke. It has a purple tint to it. Should have used another tint that was gray.
http://images30.fotki.com/v40/photos/8/829155/5464370/Peugeot90817a-vi.jpg
I've painted the white and red areas and put on a black basecoat for the decals. Used two sheets of CF so far.

I just joined the group (have been lurking for a long time) so I could comment on this build. I got the kit from Stradasports a few weeks ago; I asked him about preordering as soon as I found out S27 was doing the kit. My son and I went to Le Mans this year for the first time, and got to see this car in person. I have a few photos, but have to figure out how to post them. I would suggest that you darken up the CF on the fenders a lot, because they looked almost black in person. They were also a kind of satin finish, not glossy. I was thinking of using the SMS hi-def CF, but haven't decided yet. Your build looks great so far, and I'm following with great interest. I haven't started mine yet.

Still working the decals, but nearly finished with the CF. I've used three sheets of SMS twill weave so far, and will use some plain weave on the body (fuselage?).

After these decals are on, I'll mask and spray the CF areas with Alclad smoke to darken them, then apply livery decals, then apply clearcoat, then spray the CF areas with a semi gloss coat. At least, that's the plan.

Fantastic decal job, youŽre doing fabulous work as I remember how hard the Scale Motorsport decals are to work with. This will be looking good. Since I started a debate about which Clear coat to use: Which will will you use? Will you spray from an airbrush or out of a can??

As a TS13 fan lately I destroyed (ok not 100%) decals job on my red Alpine442: I sprayed after decanting it, all gone well, so I decided for last wetcoat...... You'll imagine....
Sorry........
Sh## this was simply beautiful.

ah sh*** man.
That's what i use now some MR hobby clearcoat. They don't attack the decals and dry really fast.
I'm building mine but I'll tend to do it matt.or at least satin but not gloss. Just a thought.
Good luck !!!

Yes, it was TS-13 right out of the can. It only cracked the Alclad where it went on heavy. This was the first coat. I figured I would spray light coats on until covered, then go with heavier coats, but it didnt work out that way. The model is salvageable, but means a lot of work that i'm not motivated to do right now.

Oooh No..:banghead: When will you guys learn that TS13 is NOT decal friendly. :screwy: I had a disaster 10 years ago on a Jag kit, I'll never clearcoat decals again with it. I know some modellers on here have great success with it, but I hate the stuff and would not of taken the risk on such a precious kit. I use Mr Hobby Topcoat with no problems.
That's such a shame as it was looking superb. :frown:
