I have a '98 Chevy Tracker, and while doing 70mph on the interstate it hits 4,000 rpms, I was told this is high, I was wondering if it was or if this is normal for a 3 speed automatic? ....Please help, dont want to ruin my transmition......:bloated:

I know on my 5spd I set the cruise on 70 and rpms are about 3500 but you have a little smaller engine and auto so it could be about 4000.

If it's only a 3spd, then that is probably normal.

suzuki builds some of the highest revving motors in the world so I don't think 4000 rpm's is much concern. I do know that the 1.6 8V engines should not go over 5500rpm.

My wife has a 2000 Tracker, AKA Suzuki Grand Vitara, with the 2.0 liter engine. It has a 4 speed automatic. It is a 4 Wheel Drive. At 70 it is in the low 3000's. 4000 may be about right for your engine with your transmission. If you are still concerned about this call a Suzuki dealer, they are more familiar with Trackers-Vitaras than most Chevy dealerships. They should be able to put your mind at rest or let you know if you have cause for concern. I also suggest looking into the new 0W40 Mobil 1 synthetic oil. It is made for small hi rev engines. My next oil change in my wife's Tracker I am switching from 5W30 Mobil to the 0W40. It should provide maximum performance for your engine. Maximum flow at startup and maximum protection once warmed up.

Ps. I went out and drove wife's Tracker to verify rpm range. At 70 in overdrive the tach indicates about 2900 rpm. Dropping the tranny into Drive the rpms go over 4000 at 70. Glad I got the 4 speed auto. But don't despair. These little Suzuki's are built like tanks. You are mainly just not getting the mpg you would get with a higher gear. Sorry. Just make sure and change your oil regularly. Go Synthetic.
