Is 0W-30 oil OK for my 03 4.8? How many quarts does it actually hold with filter change?

Use the recommended oil weight that is in your user manual. I believe it is 5w-30. If you use anything thiner than 5w and thicker than 10w, then you could cause early termination to your enigne. If you truck is under warrenty, you could void it out.
How many miles on your truck? What year?

So when your engine Fails, are they going to cover the cost to repair it?
I don't think so, even if they claim it you would have to prove it.
Don't take the chance.. use the manufacture's recommendation. 5w-30

5w30 Conventional. Normally Penzoil or whatever is reasonably priced. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive.

I also think that the 0W-30 oil may be more expensive. I used to run it but now run 5W-30.

Yes is is more expensive but amsoil says it's has more protection properties then the 5-30 and last longer.

Ever since it's first oil change I have always used Castrol GTX 5w30
I now have 160K miles on it and it has never hicupped.
I am thinking about switching to the High milage, but I have not decided yet.

Mobil 1 fully synthetic, 5-w30, every 3000 miles or so, 50+k no problems, I change mine so often because I run my truck hard, everyday. This last change I threw 1qt of lucas synthetic oil treatment in.

They say there's not much difference in standard oils,is there with synthetic brands?

I'm probably the roughest person on a silverado here(countless nitrous bottles put through it) and I've had zero problems out of my 6.0L. I've always and will continue to always use the Castrol Synthetic blend 10w 30. I figure that if its held up to what I've put it through, it has to be a pretty good oil.

Just wondering, why don't you go all the way "full synthetic"?

Forgot to ask, do you change the oil after every run or use it for 6 months or so?

I go 3000-5000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first :grinyes: To be honest, when I started using it several years ago, I was still skiddish about going to a full synthetic, so I gave the blend a try. After running this for so long, I guess I kind of have the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset now. I do use Castrol Syntec in my camaro, and have had zero problems with it so far.

Just out of curiousity, how the hell can 0-30 have more protection properties than 5-30?

It's lower cold viscosity(0w) will flow quicker to vital areas faster, thus
reducing start up wear, where most of the wear on an engine happens.

You are not going to see much differance in 0w and 5w. Unless you live in Alaska. Do you?

The problem with 0w oil is that they do not do as well when the engine gets hot, because it does not have the viscosity to resist the heat. The Oil will break down faster.
Again, will Amsoil pay for the engine repairs when it breaks down?

I talked to the Amsoil tech support and they said, the only difference in protection is for cold starting they both work the same at operating temperture.

Hey, I saw the posts about the warranty issues and I see no other dealer of AMSOIL has responded. I figure I need to set the record straight. First, I am a INDEPENDENT DEALER OF AMSOIL, I AM NOT POSTING THIS TO GET YOUR BUSINESS. I just want the facts to be out there, not speculation. Here is the Text of AMSOIL's warranty. Personally I have yet to have someone need it, but if it does happen to one of my customers, I will personally (If they are within a reasonable distance from me (100 miles or so)) come out and draw a sample to be sent out. Now, if your across the country from me I would ship out my sampler system out to you and a pre-paid envelope to send off the sample. That is just what I would do, I can not vouch for another dealers actions, that is just how I treat my customers.

And before you read this, the 0w-30 product is our 25k mile oil. The 5w-30's can be had in 10k interval and OEM interval.
