I just bought a 1996 gmc jimmy in july. It sees to be a great car. Except the last few days when it is cold outside the car will not go into reverse. I can put it into reverse and hit the gas but it seems that it just doesnt switch from park? I had somethign similar happen in a ford explorer before the transfer case and tranny went out... am i looking toward the same problems? Like I said two weeks ago this car did not do this..although it is getting colder so is it normal? Once the car warms up it switches gears fine. thank you:) any ideas will help i have no clue what im doing!

I would start by checking the fluid level in the transmission. Make sure you check it while the vehicle is running. If the fluid is low then check for leaks. The fluid should be dark red, if its not then you may be in the early stages of transmission failure. I have had good luck with Lucas transmission fix, its about $10 a bottle at auto zone. It won't fix your problem but will extend the life of the transmission a bit.

Welcome to AF.
Morning sickness in reveres is not a good thing.
But as said check that fluid level.
A good transmission filter and fluid service may help it out.
Also when you have the transmission pan off check for any extra metal or clutches in the bottom of it.
Go easy on the dope or additive.
Good clean fluid is the best additive.
Another note dexron 111 is being phased out.
If you can not get it anymore.
The only GM approved replacement fluid is dexron 6.
And the 6 stands for about 6$ a qt.:grinyes:
Multi purpose or fit all fluid is not good.

transmission fluid is good .. no burn smell... good color ... I was told to see if it has a hard time in drive..I never thought of that because it had to warm up to get out of my parking spot before I can put it in drive. So I will test that when I take my husband to work at 5 am ! besides that I am still lost but thinking maybe this is a bigger problem then I might want to deal with.

Yes putting in drive fist may help.
But if it has morning sickness go for a fluid and filter change first thing.
People that keep there transmission serviced regular have a lot less transmission problems.
