Alright, I'm going to see if I can't get this project going and see what you guys think.
So this is my first ever car model. I've been building planes my whole life pretty much and a lot have been to IPMS contests and what not. I must say, IPMS is one great organization...
But anyway, this model was given to me by my girlfriend, and it's my favorite car. So i need to build it.
It's an AMT F&F supra, so it's got some work ahead of it to look killer, but it's well on it's way. I finally figured out to use the Macro setting on my camera, and amazing things happened. so here goes, let me know what you guys think.

There it is with the cut out door.

I think it's gonna look mean...
I made a few big mistakes already. First, I primered with Krylon high build....that took forever to get rid of. then i tried testors. bad idea. I'm going to wait until i get some tamiya, thanks to all you guys who suggested that in my other thread. I've got a few other things started, but it's late. I'll get that up tomorrow after test and tune night!:grinyes:

Once you try tamiya you won't want to go back. I mainly use tamiya, but one drawback is how much it costs. Dupli-Color is nice too. Nice job on the door removal. Keep us updated.

A little note on the door, my roomate has a full size supra and there is no frame around the window on the door. the glass just goes up and seals around the A pillar, roof, and B pillar.

HA, I'm glad you told me that. HERE'S WHY!
http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/30731/2002558219372425973_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2002558219372425973)
I knew it was going to eventually happen. I just haven't seen yet if it was supposed to be there. Can you take some pics in and around the driver door of your roommate's supra? I can find some stuff, but not what i'm really looking for. I wanna see where the dash meets and what not.
anyway, I worked a little with the trunk, but got frustrated with the testors crap primer, so i moved back to the driver door to get some base work going. here's what i've got.
http://aycu22.webshots.com/image/26901/2000322209069462507_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2000322209069462507)
there it is with some of the interior so i can try to get an idea of where to put door molding and what not
http://aycu17.webshots.com/image/28176/2000399262243063332_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2000399262243063332)
that's with the kit side panel, but I doubt I'm going to use it. it fits like a steak on a vegan's plate....

and there you have it pretty much. I am not too pleased with what I did with the door. I really need to have one of these cars to get good reference pics. I was thinking of going with a lambo door... But maybe not. What do you guys think? I don't think i've ever done the ammount of scratch building and plastic surgery this kit is going to need. I may have bitten off more than I can chew for a first car, but I'll get it figured out, hopefully with your guy's help! I'm going to work on my f348 too, so i'll get that up with some pictures.

I can take some pictures if you would like, unfortunatly the car is almost completly disassembled because we just got done repainting it, there are no doors or interior on the car.
just let me know if you still want pics, I will try to be of any help I can.

NOMADGAMER: thanks. I was worried it would look bad, but I think i'll salvage it. It needs the armrest and what not still.
mugenhb: I have a feeling this build will take me quite a while, so just whenever you get a chance that would be nice. I could use some engine shots if you have access. I figure i'm going to start the engine here pretty soon.

considering its an AMT kit, anything you do is an improvement.
In all seriousness, progress looks good. AMT kits are cheap and great for spare parts, you should see the stack of them at my house.

well, here's what I've done tonight. I let my g/f pick the color for the car since she did get it, and I got a better primer and a textured paint for the underside of the car.

there's the hood. I was itching to finally paint something, and the hood was the only thing that was really ready to be painted. couple more coats and a couple clears, this thing's gonna shine!

that's my college spray booth. Don't ask me to remember this day, the fumes are getting to me.

here's what i'm going to attempt to tackle next. It's discouraging how the two piece oil pan doesn't line up in any way shape or form.
well, that's it for tonight I think. I'm heading to the IPMS (international plastic modeler's society, and no, I don't PMS) contest in dayton tomorrow. I'll see if i can't get some pics and get 'em on here tomorrow. til then, later

here's the latest tonight. just a little more paint.
So, I finally got a hold of some of that tamiya compound at the dayton IPMS contest today. We'll see that stuff working later.
http://aycu25.webshots.com/image/29664/2004547720701787698_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2004547720701787698)
I decided to paint the frame and engine bay the exterior color. I think it'll look snazzy done. the only thing i might have done instead was paint it gloss black.
http://aycu16.webshots.com/image/29655/2004555181523210784_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2004555181523210784)
the contrast from the underside to the engine bay is kinda cool
http://aycu29.webshots.com/image/30428/2004501059847504668_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2004501059847504668)
so here's the hood and sport roof shining like never before after that tamiya compound. I can't wait to see the rest of the body this color.

I washed the gas tank, but I'm not sure how it looks. to my airplane standards, it's good, but this is a car....

looks like you have a fuel leak! NO SMOKING AROUND THIS MODEL!!! haha
You did a good job on the wash, but I rarely see a tank look "wet" like it appears in the photo. If it were me, I would have painted the tank a black, or dark DARK gray (I rarely see a bare metal tank in real life, they usually have a plastic coating, or paint to protect from corrosion) and then use a slightly lighter shade of the same color, dry brushed on, from front to back, to simulate scratches and scuffs from road debris, and dirt. then hit it with a dark dirty brown/gray mix for a wash to simulate the dirt that has stuck to it while riding down the road.
I honestly didn't think this would be a build worth paying much attention to, no offense, but you have done a fantastic job on the parts you have painted, and you seem to be on the stick! I look forward to more progress.

Excellent progress so far really makin an AMT supra look stunning :bigthumb:
i would probably shy away from the lambo doors being it your first car model, but im not sure of your skills because there is a lot of hingework in plane modeling. At any rate Keep up the good progress!!

well, I'm a little worried about the doors myself. I'm not however doing lambo doors, i don't like them really.
I have a question for anyone who can help me. I don't know what to use as a screen in those 4 cut outs on the hood. Hopefully there's something i can get at a hardware store, but if i really need to get something from a hobby source for realism, then i will. I just don't know what to get.

I found some 1:87 scale chain link fence at a model railroad shop that works great for this. it is actually quite thin expanded metal, just like your 1:1 "grill mesh", and can be shaped quite easily. Or if you have any tamiya kits with the black mesh stuff, that would work too, but then the kit you take it from will be without, and you'll still be in the same dilemma, but at least your current project will move foreward.

Alright, so I got a little work on the engine done. Don't criticize it too much, i know it's not the greatest. I kinda just wanna get it done because the AMT engine is so horribly detailed, but I wanna get a taste of a little engine work. Let me know what you think.

Here's the engine bare. The oil pan didn't match up with the bottom of the block at all, and I didn't do a lot of research on this motor so i kinda guessed. I just widened the bottom of the block to match the kit oil pan, then added a sump to the kit oil pan.

there it is done and with a crappy coat of paint.

there's the exhaust manifold gasket/bracket for the pipes... a little big i know, but i haven't figured out how to cut such small pieces of styrene so exactly.

the pipes in (I used solder)

there's the pipes bent to look like an equal length turbo header. I still don't know what i'm goign to do for the turbo. Should i try to make one, or is there a resin aftermarket i can find?

haven't finished the intake side. I don't know what I'm goign to do for the main body of the manifold.
I also need to make an intercooler and plumbing for the system. I don't know where to get the stuff for the intercooler, and i'm not sure what to use for the plumbing. I was thinking just more solder.
anyway, there you have it. I hate to say this, but my work on this is goign to slow a little. I am going to try building an aircraft for a museum, and that will preoccupy my time, plus I'm working on a 1903 Rambler (I'll start a WIP thread, but it's goign to be OTB). anyway, thanks for the comments guys, I really look forward to hearing what you guys have to say, seeing so many knowledgable modelers on this forum.

what size diameter solder is that? I'm working on a tamiya supra and I am doing the same style manifold, but all my solder is too big.
