Today I had the not so obvious pleasure of listening to this dude tell me that a Mazda 626 tops out at 140 mph.
I would tend to think not, seeing that this would make it faster or about on par with a Mazda Millenia. I can't understand this and I even debated with him that Mazda wouldn't do a thing like that, making a lowered tier level car faster or equal to in top speed to their luxury level flagship mobile.

Somebody get me the 411 on this please tell me:

I know only one thing about the 626: For any given year, the NHTSA has logged more than 10x the number of Automatic Transmission complaints about the 626 than the Maxima. For example, for the 1994 model year of both cars, 92 people logged complaints about automatic tranny failure, vs. 8 people for the Max. For the 1999 model year, it was 27 for the 626, 2 for the Max.

Matter of fact, for any given year, the 626 has logged about 3x the TOTAL complaints as opposed to the Maxima. And though I don't have sales figures in front of me (searched but couldn't find 'em), I am fairly certain that Mazda did not sell 3x the 626's as Nissan sold Maximas. I have seen data to indicate that 50-70% of 626 auto trannies fail before 80,000 miles, about 10% of the time, more than once.

Based on this data, I have concluded that the 626 is a bad investment, no matter what the top speed. Rest assured that your Maxima will age gracefully and reliably, as opposed to the 626.

And make fun of that kid for being a moron.

140hp for the 626 sounds about right, similar to honda accors, are you talking about the big 4 banger or v6? My guess is the new mazda6, 3.0 v6 comes in pretty close to the max. The millennia with the Miller motor puts out 190 hp. Mazda makes some pretty cool stuff, check out the new mazdaspeed protege.
BTW, did you compare complaint stats on leaky fuel injectors, cheesey ball joints and stereo amps? These comparisons can go on & on & ON, 6 of 1 & a half dozen of the other. Also, stats mean nothing when you are the chosen 1, as in my case, my Max sits in my garage waiting for a tranny replacement. ( the CDC estimates the smallpox vaccination will kill 15-25 people, some say this is safe, but what if you are 1 of the chosen to die?)

I did. Mazda 626 had 3x the TOTAL complaints for every year I looked at. That includes all problems.

True stats don't mean anything when you're the unlucky one. But if you held out 2 vaccinations, 1 with a 1% kill rate, and the other with 3%, I would go with the 1%.

You,re putting too much emphasis on the stats, remember Thomas Jefferson, "there are lies,damn lies, and statistics", to which I later addaed "specifications". The correct choice on the vaccinations would be neither, Being a chiropractor, haven't had a vaccination since 1980.
stats don't go far enogh to describe the smoothness or finesse with which a car performs, how well it all comes togeher in real life. In the auto magazine comparisons, the writers usally at the end say the honda was the car the raters prefer to drive, after having initially apologised for including the honda in the comparison because it cost so much less than the other cars in the comparison, and usually also had a much lower horsepower specification.
The specs don't tell how smooth my Max motor runs, sometimes I just stand and stare at the running motor with the hood up. I listened with a stethoscope, you can just barely hear something whirring inside. It's about the smoothest motor I ever saw. Now, if only my tranny worked, I could drive the car. Instead I have to drive my AWD turbo talon, a car thats big on specs, but only a mitsubishi at heart.

What kind of proof can you show me that a 626 tops out at 140? I've researched every site I can to find proof of the 140 and the only thing I've found that is remotely close is 130 and the newer versions even with the 6 cylinder will only be limited to 120 125 at best based on the various websites I've looked at. In fact the new or replacement for the 626 will be named the 6 and it is only top end geared to do 120 or 125.

Do some research, see if I'm wrong. I still don't believe any 626 stock that is, can do 140.

As far as trannies on Nissan, everybody knows our trannies aren't really built to handle all the power the VQ's put through the torque converters.

Try google search, for 2002 the mazda in-lin 4 puts out125hp, the 2.5 v6 puts out 165hp, for 2003, the 2.3 in-line 4 puts out 150hp and the 3.0v6 puts out 219hp. My guess is the 626 is somewhat smaller and lighter than the max. Mazda's are fun to drive, that's the bottom line--not to slight nissans in any way, they are fun to drive as well, I got 2 of them, a 1990 Max and a 1987 200sx-SE--both have the same motor of which I am very fond, but my 1986 mazda rx-7 is the quickest of all. Even though the 1.3liter rotary specs at 146 hp., the car is much lighter and much more balanced, the rotary motor makes the most incredibly smooth power. I would take an RX-7 over a 300zx any day.

My debate isn't about whether or not Mazdas are fun to drive, my friend had an RX-7 (1986 model) and it was fun to drive. My debate is about whether or not a stock 626 can top out at 140. I search Irishcar.com and it showed me the new 6 (replacement for the 626) and it only topped out at 125.

My point to the person I was debating with was I didn't think Mazda would make the 626 that fast since it would usurp sales from their flagship vehicle the Millenia S which is supposed to be more powerful and luxurious.
At any rate I still haven't found out whether or not a stock 626 would hit 140 without removing the rev limiter or adding mods.

yeah, I seriously doubt the 626 will do 140, but anything is possible I suppose. In 1995, I drove my 86 accord cross country from California, on the return drive, I had the cruise control set at 126mph for a short time in Wyoming--the tach was only at 4.5k rpms--the aerodynamics of the car,(.032 cd) makes all the difference. Getting back to the max, the factory wing on the back of my 90 max se appears to be not well thought out. It's width is too short for one thing, makes it look like an afterthought, it's method of attachment at the ends adds to this. In the center of the wing, underneath where the 3rd brake light meets the trunk is a block wall that puts both drag and lift on the car. Even the Sentra wings are better thought out than this.
