The ones with three taillights are Impalas, and the ones that have two are other models like the Bel Air. I have a 1964 Bel Air that has two taillights on each side and it is constantly being mistaken for an Impala.

The Bel Air had 2 on each side and the Biscayne had 2. I love the 62 it's my favorite year of the Impalas.

The styling characteristic of giving the most expensive full size chevy 3 tail lights per side was used for many years from 1958 (I think) into the early '80's .

I think GM should have taken that styling cue and continued on the tradition with the 3 tail lights on the 2000+ model years. Maybe if the Impala is reborn as a RWD model in the next decade that might be possible. Think of the sales they'd get from the baby boomers thinking back to their youth.
