New battery, coil has continuity, pick up coil has 850 ohms resistance. New cap and rotor. There is voltage to the coil power wire. Replaced the 7 terminal style module with a Standard brand part $$$. Checked continuity of wiring on the various small harnesses connected to the module.
No spark when cranking. Yes there is fuel in the tank, can see it squirting into the carb.
There is a control box, apparently wired to the distributor, under the dash in front of the glove box.
This vehicle is driven infrequently. This problem started after a torential rainstorm this summer. At first it was a sporadic problem, not no start at all. I inherited this truck and it is unmolested from original.
I'm a fair mechanic but this has me stumped.
One other odd thing. Some times when letting off the key the engine will give a sputter as if to start but it won't start.

Check the timing chain

Check or replace the ignition switch and/or the wiring to and from it.

o!
i might know this one.
too much gas getting in when you're cranking it.
mine did that for a few days once, until i fixed the choke.
actually, not fixed, removed in the process of diagnosis.
make sure that it is working properly, and that your fuel pressure is in the correct range. failing that, check the ignition control module.
i had that fail on two different camaros i once had, produced similar symptoms.
:edit:
damnit! i went back and reread it. you actually said no spark, but with fuel.
try that control module still, i guess.
:end edit:
i hope i win a star if i get it right.

Sorry Mr Mushroom, no star. It's not flooded. There's no spark
I did, today, take the old and the new modules to Auto Zone and had them tested - both OK.
Oh, I mis spoke this has the 5 pin modules - apparently not so common.
I also replaced the coil, with another unit I had lying around.
The only thing it could be at this point is the pickup coil, but it measures OK with the ohm meter. Wiggling the wires makes no difference - they can sometimes break inside the insulation. It's a pain to replace them, total distributor disassembly.
Oh, and it's not the chain, the rotor turns when I crank the engine. That's not to say it hasn't "jumped" timing, but there would still be a spark.

I had a similar problem with my 84. The computers used on the 84's were cheap sorry excuses at best. I simply bought a new distributer for the earlier years prior to the computers. The distributer had one less plug (that was where the computer plugged in). I installed the new distributer and just left the computer unplugged. The truck started right up and has continued to strat daily every since. You can pick up a new distributer on ebay for around $70.
