last week my cruise control started to not work, sometimes it will most time it will not work, sometimes the light will come on that it is engaged but it does not other times the light will blink and not engage. when it tries to engage you can feel it in the motor and by rpms but it will not stay on. other times it acts like nothing is wrong

There's a reasonable chance you have a bad clockspring causing the issues. Are you also getting an SRS/airbag light?

The clockspring should not cause anything to damage further than what the clockspring itself does. You may end up with no horn, no cruise, no remote radio controls, and possibly no air bag. It should not cause the airbag to inadvertantly detonate or the radio to go to full volume, etc.

However, there are multiple contacts of the clocksprings, so more items could begin to fail.

On a 2002, it could be possible for the servo to fail. On the 2003 and newer LS, the speed control servo does not exist, it is integrated as part of the "drive by wire" throttle motor.
