synchronizer settings

Anyone familiar with setting the synchronizers on the 98 5.0's?- Im speaking of after youve set the TDC,does that shaftonly go in one way for alighnment,or--do you need /or can you adjust the oil pump portion of the shaft into position before you drop the top portion in?Its not clear in Hayes-and I'd rather not leap before I look--many thanks
