99 Olds Intrigue transmission problems

I have a 99 Olds Intrique with about 135,200 miles on it. Overall its, been a great car. Only had to change brakes and a few minor other things. The "Service Engine Soon" light has come on occasionally, but I just take it to Auto Zone and they put it on the OBD and give me the code and I fix whatever the problem is.
Recently, lately the car seems to shift hard (sporadic)and you can see and hear the RPM's shining and then the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on. Then if I keep driving it for a while, then the "Service Engine Soon" light goes off and it runs okay. Another day or so later, the same thing happens again. I did get a code from Autozone, something to do with the Transmission Control Clutch selinoid sensor (something like that) or the code that says something in the tranmission is stuck open. Does anyone know where is it located in the engine so If I want to do it myself? Anyways, We had the tranny fluid and filter changed and it did not seem to help much. So we made an appointment with a transmission shop for this coming week and are expecting to pay $500 or so.
Heres the funny thing............ Over the weekend we reset the "change oil light" (turn engine on ACC, press gas pedal three times and wait for engine to reset change oil light) Ever since we did that, the "Service Engine Soon" light does not come on, and the car shifts pretty smoothly, maybe ocassionally a small, slight skip. Could resetting the "change oil light" reset the engines computer and fix the problem itself? Like I said, the last two days the service engine soon light never comes on and lately it came on every day. Plus it seems to shift alot smoother than before.
Any help would be appreciated. I guess for now I will cancel the appointment with the transmission shop! Save me a little money. Ha Ha

I doubt that re-setting the change oil light had anything to do with your tranny problem - but I could be wrong.
The selenoid is probably sticking intermittently. This is NOT an easy fix if it really is the selenoid.
The best thing to do when (if) it acts up again is have the code read, write the code down and post it here.
I had a selenoid problem with my '99' and ended up changing it myself. Some will recommend changing the oil and filter which you did, or adding some type of fluid conditioner and shifting the trans. manually for a while. These didn't work for me.
Be very careful when you take it to a tranny shop unless you know or trust them. I made that mistake! After they took it for a test drive and pulled the pan I was told - "major problems - we have to pull the tranny and see what parts it needs. Can't give you an exact quote but figure on around $1000 +". Only after insisting that I was taking my car w/o them touching it did they put the pan back on and I was on my way.
I believe the total for parts, fluid, etc. was around $100 - this included an another selenoid that I changed just because I had it apart.
I'm not recommending that you do the same as I don't know how experienced you are or what tools you have but maybe with a little info you won't get burned.
B.T.W., I changed those selenoids 3 -4 years ago and its still working fine at 150,000 + miles.

Thanks for the information. When the "Service engine Soon" light came on, I had the code read by Autozone. Its "PO742" and got a printout from Autozone. The definition is "TCC stuck on". The Explanation is "TCC commanded off by the EMC- TCC slip detected after off command". Probable causes " 1. TCC Solenoid failure 2. Open or short circut condition 3. Blocked passage in transmission and 4. Check transmission range switch for proper operation.
I have never had to use a mechanic when repairs my olds, we have done minor repairs ourselves. I hate to bring it into the tranny shop, but the estimated about $500. Who know what they will say when its torn apart. But if we could replace the TCC by ourselves, we would do it.

That is the same code I had.
Hopefully they will stick to the $500 quote. I don't think thats too much $$ for what this job involves. They don't have to remove the trans. to do this repair but I guess that would be up to them. Once removed it would make the job of changing the selenoid alot easier.
Good luck
