88 4.0 starts but stalls right away 5 or 6 times,then stays running??

Possibly a bad coolant temperature sensor. May not be getting a rich enough fuel mixture at a cold start. Are you pumping the gas when cranking? If so, engine could be flooding and thus the stalling.
