I'm not sure of price to change with heads on car, but they are easy if you have or can borrow a valve spring compressor. Remove valve covers, rocker arms and spark plugs, Find a 8.8 piece of spark plug wire (ha ha ) thats what I use works great, which ever spring your going with first push the plug wire in spark plug hole and spin engine by HAND until it stops, this way the valves will stay in place, with spring tool compress spring remove locks (2-pieces) Remove tool and spring and you will see seal good ones will have wire retainers. Thats what you should replace the old ones with, now with everything removed see if you can shake valve stem side to side, if it moves alot you should remove heads and have new valve guides installed, usually 10-15 a piece. Also when removing spark plugs (doing so after car sits long enough to cool) look to see what plugs are wet and that will save you from pulling all the springs. Hope this helps. If we were closer I'd help you out. lol.:sun:

Its getting more fuel than what it needs at start. Does it seem to sputter for about 2-5 seconds and then start normal?

With an 85, wouldn't it be time for a total rebuild?

Age dosen't mean that a motor is junk or is time for a rebuild. Our 86 fiero has 57,000 miles and runs great and age has nothing to do with it. Its Miles Ringo;)

Common prblemin cold weather state the rings nedtime to expand when they are warm they enlarge abit..
the real
? is since is ounlloy 10secondsis haw much oil do you lose between changes
also you can use a heavier starting oil like instest of 5w use 10 w or 15 w..thatwill take care of the problem.. and you mightwant tostay away from sythetic and shorted you dyno oil interval to 2000 miles.
this is a comon problemwiththe pre01 LS1 1 quartof oilis statard loss betwen 3koil changed.but we use 10 wand add one bottle of 15wand the problem is gene and they use tosmoke forlike 10-15 seconds on startupsolong as Wotyou don'thave smoke...havesmeone look foryou

iF SMOKE IS PRESENT UPON STARTUP..ONE ITS MINOR WRING BLOW BYE.. WHEN THE PISTONS EXPANDS THE SMOKE DISAPEARS
TWO ITS A DESIGN FLAW THAT MANIFESTS ITSSELF IN COLD WEATHER PISTON SHRINGAGE.
tHREE IF YOUR CATLESS. MOISTURE FROM THE DAY BEFORE WILL CAUSE STEAM OUT OF THE PIPES.. I HAD THIS AND THOUGH MY ENGINE WAS RUINED.. UNTILL I SPOTTED THE WATER DROPLETS.. CHECH TO SEE IF ITS RESIDUE.. IF ITS BLUEISH THEN ITS OIL BLOW BYE.. BUT IF IT STOP AFTER 5-10 SECONDS ITS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT IMMEDIADETLY.. IF HOWEVER WHEEN YOU PUNCH IT AND BLUE SMOKE COMES OUT THEN YOU HAVE A RING PROBLEM..
REMEBER ITS GOTTA BE WHITISH NOT BLACK WHEN YOU PUNCH IT OTHERWISE ITS JUST MINOR WRING

These engines were known to smoke on start up. The valve seals apparently weren't very good and allow oil to leak down from the heads into the cylinders while sitting overnight etc... It really isn't a big deal if you don't mind the smoke. I have and 85 TA and it has smoked like that since around 100,000 and now has over 200,000 and has been driven hard the whole time.

just change the valve seals, how many miles
does it have? my brother has a 86 trans am
with over 230,000 miles on it. runs strong,
it smoked when we would start it up,
but wouldnt smoke no more. we had the
heads redone at a local performance shop
that builds racing engines, $235.00
and no more smoke. but this is on a
carb'ed engine 5.0 liter h.o. i think
it might be more for a f.i. engine.
