fuel filter replacement nightmares

I spent the better part of 2 hours last night trying to remove the factory installed fuel filter from my 02 GP GT (3.8L). I know that it isn't a difficult process, but I almost rounded the edges of the fuel line bolt trying to get the thing loose. I sprayed it down with WD-40 in hopes of loosening it, but still, no dice.

I know that the larger of the two bolts is attached to the body of the fuel filter....so I used an open ended wrench to hold it in place so I didn't torque the metal fuel line and damage it.

Has anyone else had a hard time removing this piece? Could I buy a replacement bolt to slip onto the fuel line once the old filter is removed, before I install the new filter?

Dorman makes a replacement end kit. It runs about $15.00 and the Dorman part number is 800-153. It is available at most auto parts stores. It involves using a tubing cutter to cut the existing 3/8" fuel line and installing the repair kit using a compression fitting. While you're at the parts store, pick up some anti-seize, made by Permatex. Put a dab on the threads before installing the fuel filter, makes it easy for the next guy replacing the filter, it might be you ;)

The Dorman/Help Fuel Line Repair Kit (Part#55180) is essentially same as 800-153. However, #55180 includes a spring tube bender.

I had an awful time removing mine from my '02 last year. I hate the placement of it, and the design of it. It just shouldn't be that difficult. They make a quick-connect for one end - why not one for both ends?? Definitely has to be a better way.

I had the same problem, eventually with enough force on the bolt only and not the line mine broke free. You will also get some gas all over so have a container. Good luck.
