Loose multifunction switch

I have a 1995 Taurus SHO. The multifunction switch on the left side of the column that controls the wipers, windshield wipers, turn signals and high beams is loose - the shaft into the column and the cap at the end. Everything still works, I'm just very careful when turning things on or off. Is there maybe just a screw loose inside the top cap or in the shaft itself? Is there anyway to tighten it up without have to replace the whole switch? As I said, it does work. The dealer wants in excess of $500 to replace it, but it's really not broke, just loose. Any help is appreciated.

If you are going to work on the switch assembly it would be a good idea to disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent a short to ground.

There are no fasteners to the cap or shaft itself. If the cap and shaft are loose inside the multifunction switch it will have to be replaced..It is a sealed unit. The unit is attatched to the steering column with 2 screws.

Steps to remove the multifunction switch.

1. Remove the screws under the steering column shrouds and remove the top and bottom shrouds.
2. Remove the 2 multifunction switch screws.
3. Disconnect the 2 multifunction switch electrical connectors (slide them off) and remove the switch.

Instead of spending $500 at the dealer you could find one at an Auto Salvage there in Baltimore. This switch is used across the board on most Ford Models. Give them a call. I would guess it would cost
$20 to $50. Maybe less. You could do it yourself with a phillips head screwdriver (star pattern on the end). I don't mean to insult your intelligence if you know what a phillips head screwdriver is. Take Care. Dave

Thanks so much for replying. Everything I've read says the whole steering column has to be taken apart. Thank goodness it's not that involved. I did find the part at Standard Auto for $56.00. And yes, even though I am a female, I do know what a phillips head screwdriver is! LOL! Again, great thanks!
