3.2 TL Starting Problem

When cold, the starter will not engage. When I turn the key, I get a single, hard clicking sound. This process repeats from 1-2-10 or more times, but then the starter will usually engage and the car will start. The problem is worse on cold mornings. The problem is only apparent first thing in the morning or after the car sits for several hours. Suggestions?
