2.4L '99 CAI install

Ok I'm about to order this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BOMZ-95-02-Chevy-Cavalier-2-4L-Cold-Air-Intake-97-98-99_W0QQitemZ140157239994QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item14 0157239994) and based on the picture, I'm not sure how it's going to fit into my hood so I took some pictures. If anyone can find a better choice for me for about $50 definetly post a link.

First, is the tubing supposed to connect at point 1 or 2 (http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/dd171/theessence136/?action=view&current=StockBox2.jpg)? Or is is supposed to connect directly to the TB like right here (http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd171/theessence136/TBWide2.jpg), which is under that black cover thing. (It doesn't look like it has a purpose, what is it for?)

I'm really having trouble visualizing how this CAI is going to fit in there right and end up down where it is supposed to. From the little bit that I'm actually picturing, it also seems like if it DID end up down into the fender, then it would be facing back toward the back of the car. Is that ok?

If there's anyone good with "paint" or something, it would be helpful if you could give me a general idea of how this would fit under the hood.

This is the first time I've ever done anything under the hood so I want to make sure its at least possible before I order the CAI, try to install it, and fail. :shakehead If it's possible then I'm sure I'm capable of doing it under all of you guys' guidance :wink:

First off, the ebay listing says its made for a Cavalier. I'm not sure about the similarities in the positioning of things under the hood between Grand Ams and Cavaliers, but usually cold air intakes are vehicle specific. Second, I just installed a warm air (short ram) intake on my 1995 grand am a few days ago and it connects directly to the throttle body at point 1 in your picture. As far as the direction the air filter is facing, it really shouldn't matter as long as its not sucking in hot engine air, that would defeat the purpose of the CAI. The factory box will come out and the intake duct that is attached to the throttle body most likely will too. If you're not very experienced under the hood your best bet is probably to order an intake designed and made specifically for your vehicle. That picture may not be specific to the one you are buying.
But it looks like it should work.

The elbow goes onto the TB and the bent side hooks to that,
then the long section goes next to the battery to where the old air box was.
Still a WAI though :(

Yeah I didn't think it would go down far enough. I can't find anything that's a whole lot different than that. I guess I'm willing to pay more if that's the only possible way I'll be able to get a true CAI going on. But still, I havn't seen anything that's any different than that.

What do I do?

Nobody has an idea? Is there any way I could rig something up to work? I'm not really sure how or if I could connect an extra piece of pipe or something to go down into the fender from the WAI. :banghead:

There has to be some way to make it happen. Or is it not possible?

I just sold my 95 with the 2.4 a few weeks ago,
so I cant remember if it has a hole in the fender to even put a CAI tube through.....

If it does then you could install a "true" CAI instead of the WAI.
Not many options with the 2.2-2.4L's with out modifying your car.


OK, I jsut looked at your pics and you do have the hole next to the washer fluid res. so you should be able to use a CAI or fab something up.

I was thinking, You can move that battery box back.

It only has a couple bolts holding it on, this would allow you to get a straighter shot to the fender.

I'm sure you can rig up some sort of true CAI I've seen it on other GA's w/2.4.

Remember, modding isnt cheap! :grinno:

ok so if I wanted to fab something up using the ones I linked, what would i need in order to attach another piece to go down into the fender? Also, what would be a decent material to use to extend the pipe.

I'd really not have to weld something because I have no means of doing so myself. If there's any other way to make this happen it would be better.

If I did just get this WAI that they call a CAI, would I see any benefits over my stock air box in terms of HP or gas mileage? I guess I just wonder if it would be worth the $60 to do it or if there is something else I could mod for a better cost/gain ratio?

Some part stores sell a 3" pipe for intakes thats about 5-6" long. I have seen some 30deg bent pipes and 45 deg bends. They connect with silicone couplers and large clamps.

Should be pretty easy to fab something up.

But just with one of those you linked to you will see/feel/hear a difference :D

A difference for the better I assume :grinyes: I'm going to order it tonight and we'll see what happens. Worst case scenario at least I can say that I tried. Then I'll be left just looking better under the hood and sounding a little bit more bad*ss.

i also thought about installing that CAI thing... but, the stock one have a tube that leads to the outside of engine compartment. and if i install the aftermarket one, it will be sucking in the air from the inside. So, i decided to stick with the stock one. did i think anything wrong? /bad?

Ok guys I bought this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=004&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=140157239994&rd=1) and its meant for a cavalier but everyone has said it should work the same with my GA. My only problem is that I don't know how to mount it. The mounting bracket ends up just about touching the battery right now. Where is it ideally supposed to be bolted to? Are there some other places where it would be acceptable to bolt it? Does it have to be bolted at all?

I know it's technically just a short ram right now but I'm getting more tube and couplers once I've got it in and know what exactly I need for lengths, elbows, couplers, etc...

I'll be attempting the actual install tomorrow.

Yes that's all true but the directions are meant for a cavalier and are vague regardless. The directions don't have a step for mounting it into the car at all. The only place where it seemingly is supposed to be connected is just to the throttle body with a clamp. I just didn't think this seemed right. Is this OK for it to just be kind of sitting in there? I'm just not sure if its going to bang around once I end up getting the extra pipe ordered, and put down in to the fender.

A word of caution to anyone who plans on buying a bomz racing product, the pipes are terrible. there is a 1/8" difference in diameter from one diameter to the diameter turned 90 degrees on the same opening. Just not good. Can't complain though, you get what you pay for and I didn't pay much.

The clamps will hold it on.

Both my V6's are just attached with the hose clamps seems to work just fine.

Oh yeah Bomz sucks, I've seen/heard of several disappointments from them...

ok I guess that's all I needed to hear for some reassurance before I get into it. It also would have been good to know that bomz sucks before you told me that "that one looks good, and its much cheaper!". :-p It'll work out good enough for my purposes anyways. It's no show car and its surely no muscle car so it'll do.
