i am sure a bunch of us 3300/3800 owners out there have wondered WTF does then dumb thing do and how much performance does it rob? but is it "needed" and what will i lose by removing it so the big question i as is what happens with it removed? performance gain/gas mileage loss, car no longer runs? i sprayed mine with carb cleaner and black stuff ran out like... explains why i cant even squeal my tires... dumb car.... grr so anyway anybody know?
Thanks

Very few of use V6 Grand Am owners hav the 3.3 and none I know of has the 3.8.
We mostly have 3.1/3.4's :p
Which is yours ??????????????????
Removing the screen will free up the air a little,
no noticable gain realy. Cuts down on air turbulance though.
And I'd be carefull with the carb cleaner and MAF,
can short them(toast) out, especially if it's pluged in.

removing it wouldnt hurt anything....but you have to look at it this way if somehow a large piece of anything gets past your air filter its going straight in the engine if you remove it!! i wanted to cut mine out but i decided to leave it sine you wouldnt gain much of anything in the long run.
its your car so do whatever, i just play a little on the safe side when it comes to dirt inside the engine!

:nono: id have to disagree with you both on this one. sorry Xero, but i think on our 3400 its pointless in removing it. itll just mess up the sensors readings i think itll make the car run lean, and i doubt youll get any noticeable gains from it,just my :2cents: though

Did not make either of my GA's run lean,
unless you damage the MAF that can cause problems.
I've been thinking about porting one out someday.
Just cut out the center part and smooth it out. :naughty:

what kinda small things can i do on this car to get a few extra Poofs of Umph out of it? I mean cheap like really cheep even home made cheep i can do some cool stuff with my tools/extra parts i cant hardly squak the tires in the dumb thing but my buddy has a 1993 Acheiva 4door with a 3300 that will smoke em completely STOCK so it earitates me.....
I have been debating making a hole in the hood and using dryer tubing and putting an air ram on the hood and tubing it directly into the TB and using a nylon for a filter... maybe even dual nylons with a guter screen guard on the air ram..... but that will only help top end i am debating drilling holes in all my air ports in the intake and putting "relay controlled valves" on it so at the touch of a button it would kick em open and have a direct air flow and maybe putting propane to it and open a valve so when i open the relay valves it will dump propane.... wonder if it would work like it does on a diesel?....or pure oxygen... Co2 from a paintball gun SOMTHING!!!!!

just get a basic CAI

Don't use pure oxygen. Too flamable, all it takes is the valve to be open and a small backfire, presto one hell of a hot car fire. Co2 will choke the motor out. If you are having performance issues, try the basic stuff first, clean the injectors, change the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires etc. A bad plug wire or dirty injector will make a huge difference in performance.

In the MAF sensor there are 3 tiny wires that are visible if you look through it. The screen protects the wires, but it also "straightens" the air flow so the sensors get a smooth, non-turbulent air flow across them. The sensors measure the frequency of the air passing over them. The PCM watches all three sensors and averages the readings. It converts the frequency into grams per second to determine how much air is entering the engine. Don't remove the screen. A good thing to remember... the factory will not install a part unless it is absolutely necessary, every part has a reason for being there.

:iagree:
if your cars a boggen then it's in need of some maintenance.
Or depending on mileage..... a rebuild ....
3.3 is a better engine then the 3.1/3.4 IMHO. :D
Just hard to find parts for :(
