depends on your budget, what you want to end up with, as far as re-sale. if you buy a P71, police interceptor, you have a smaller initial investment, but, as far as re-sale, some people can't get past the fact it was formerly " an old police car ". having owned several of them, i am partial to the P71, you get a balanced drive-shaft, true cross over dual exhaust, coolers for oil and tranny fluids. just make sure you are buying a solid frame, cv's from the salt belt can have frame rot.
you could spend another $10-15k and get a sport or marauder, you get a floor shift added to the above features, and a supercharger, can't be bad :)

just like mustangd said i too am partial to either the p71s and the p74s
if you get your hands on a P71 that was from a sheriffs office or from a highway patrol youd be better off cause i know around here the city cops beat the shit out of their cars (literaly, there was a cop that plowed through a street sign the other day and stopped... his wheel fell off and he lost control.) city cops love popping curbs at the earliest convinience. as far as marauders go... they are badass cars
it all really boils down to personal comfort and the size of your wallet. a crown vic in general is a very good buy

sounds like you should be saving money for traffic tickets:grinyes: but seriously, if you've got the cash the marauder has the best suspension, biggest brakes and a mach1 motor, and looks the sweetest. other than that get the p71, it'll be cheapest and you're gonna replace everything anyways so worn out stuff won't be an issue. your average civilian model won't have a rear sway bar and they have non locking 2.73 granny rears but theres no luxory stuff in an interceptor unless some sheriff special ordered it. most interceptors u get at auction or whatever are lucky to push 140, too. just so u know.

okay another thing
are crown vics drive by wire or do they have a manual throttle linkage
ive worked lots of cars
many to the point of almost illigality
and the only one ever thats been an electronic throttle was a 2003 sequoia
other wise mostly restoring mustangs, 69 chargers anything that vintage ill fix up blast w/ performance ups and then sell at way above what i bought
in the end though money goes to charity im under 18 i dont have much need for money right now
so
how hard is it to deal w/ crown vics

my '01 has a cable but newer ones are electronically controlled. I'm pretty sure they started that in '03. as far as woking on them there's not that many resources for crown vics. the only ford magazines are for trucks or mustangs, even though they say they cover other cars. out of a 5 year subscription i've can only count about 3 crown vic articles and 1 marauder. every one says they are the same as a mustang but they are very far from it. when u go to buy performance stuff for it most people are like why would u want to do that? even though they've sunk 10k into their rice burner and it still won't keep up with a stock 1/2 ton truck.:banghead:
