According to my '98 C/K manual there is a there is a "stoplamp relay" (pickups only) in the under hood fuse block.

Stop lamp switch relpacement.

1. disconnect the Neg batt cable
2. disable the SIR's system
3. remove the pushrod retainer from the brake pedal pin using snap ring pliers.
4. unplug the electrical connector

A couple of ?'s before you start ripping and tearing. Does the 3rd brake light work and do the turn signals work?

If the 3rd brake light is working and the LT & RT are not then the brake light switch is OK. The 3rd light is a direct feed from the switch. The feed for the LT & RT comes off the switch also but then goes thru the relay (mentioned above) then thru the turn signal switch (multi function) and then out to the lights.

Along with those 2 items to look at is the wiring.

Also, the turn and stop bulbs are one in the same and the wiring coming from the turn switch is the same. So I don't think there is a problem there.

Just saw a 3rd thing. In the underhood fuse block is "Maxi Fuse 2" (30a). This supplies the power thru the relay. The brake switch signal "energizes" the relay.

Hope this isn't too confusing. Good luck.............Steve

The relay is located in the "underhood fuse block" where the "maxi fuse" is located. Fuse and relay locations are listed on the placard under the cover plate. What year, model and eng is your truck?

Mine is a 94 k 1500.5.7. I dont have the fuse block,it only has a electric center on pas side fire wall. One fuse & its good.Driver side has a small relay that clicks when pedal is tapped(so I think its working) but no brake other than third light.Have replaced the pedal switch & checked all bulbs everything seems to be in order.4 ways turns & markers all work fine. There is no power at my fithwl plug or my bumper plug either.Any ideas?????????????? thank you ACE

you said the relay is NOT under the hood? sounds odd but you might want to also check up under the dash by the pedals. There should be some relays there as well. The brake light relay might be one of them.
