My engine sounds horrible

My licence had been suspended for a week now. I just took my car out on a short drive so it haden't been sitting for a long period of time. I took it out today after a week of not driving it and it sounds HORRIBLE. Smoke out the ass end for about a mnute straight, horrible hesitating up until about the 2,000 rpm mark... the engine needs to be either rebuilt or replaced.

My question is, what's the better bang for my buck? I wan't to remove the engine myself, let a machine shop do all their work, and reassemble it with an 8:1 or 9:1 compression for a TT swap. I know everyone always asks what the conversion itself would cost... but I want to know on an estimate how much I should be spending on a full engine rebuild.

depends, if you're going all aftermarket internals, could be getting way up there... How much are you looking to spend?

I don't have a butt load of money to spend, I might even have to have this project last a couple of years (more then rebuilding the engine)... I think the only things I really wanna change are the lash adjusters ('99) and the cylinders need to be bored out... other than that maybe a TT crank and oil pan because I believe they're different. I do want all parts machined though.
