00 malibu radio preset buttons

Just bought a 00 Malibu with a AM/FM CD radio.and need to know the programming the buttons steps. SOLVED this part

while I'm at it I don't have the antitheft code but not sure one is set, is there a way to check without locking the radio up?

I have been reading and from what I gather I can press the 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 at the same time and get a 6 number serial number so I can pay $15 for the code but again I read that the radio comes without a code and the owner choses it and if this is the case i need to find out without shutting the radio down. and the procedure for settins a code.

To set the buttons I found that you dial to the station then press the dial button tn and hold it then press and hold the button you want (i held it a few seconds) so all I need now is to make sure I don't shut down the radio when I didconnect the battery.
