I have a 1993 Taurus GL. The car has had a number of problems that I have been able to fix but a new problem came up today. When I put my key in my ignition and turn my car on, everything goes normal. But when I try to turn the key back and shut off my car it just turns and doesn't turn off. The only way I can describe it is when you turn a doorknob that is broken, or doesn't have the lock in it. So it just easily turns but nothing happens. Then when I try to turn it back up(the car is still running) it sometimes won't turn until a few trys. I bought a new lock cyllinder and installed it but the problem is still there. I am really trying to avoid taking it to the shop so please help. ((And the only way I am turning it off now is by unplugging the battery and alternator)). Thanks a lot!:banghead:

Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you may have an ignition switch issue. Don't confuse this with the ignition key cylinder switch. There have been quite a few threads on the ignition switch, so I'll let you try out the useful "Search this forum" feature from the Taurus forum main page.

My 1995 Mustang 5.0 did the exact same thing, starts great but won't turn off. There is a linkage that goes down the steering column to the ignition switch at the base of the column, the key is at the top. The linkage is made up of two lengths of plastic rods - pinned togeather where it needs to bend to accomodate the 'Tilt Steering Wheel'. My pin fell out!! Its a big job to remove the air bag, steering wheel, locking mechanism to even begin to gain access to where you will need to put the pin back in. Good Luck!
