a while ago i had a problem with my cars rpm jumping when i put the car in park, it goes up so high that it cannot be shut off and it diesels forever. i took it to a mechanic and he changed the choke thermostat and it was fixed. now i replaced that carburator with an identical model and i am having the same problem, only when i have the car in drive the idle is high also and it takes a couple tries to turn the car off. would this still be the choke thermostat and how easy is that to fix myself.

my car is all messed up right now with small problems. the only thing that i dont know exactly what is wrong is the gauges. when i went to fix the speedometer cable i got everything hooked back up and the gauges went haywire. none of them work. the tachometer moves but it is not right at all and stays in the same spot when im driving usually. the lights for the blinkers dont work but the highbeams light does. whats going on with that?

Don't know about that one. I would think that the high idle might be your carb problem, but the non-shutting off problem could be eletrical? Maybe someone who has more engine experience can jump in on this one.

You probably have a ground that came loose (or you forgot to hook back up) when you removed / replaced your gauges. Since they're all out, is probably a common wire between them. If you find one, and it IS hooked up, I'd get a test light and see if it's got a gap in it / short.
