clio 1.2 grande intermittently wont start

Hi there,
can anyone tell me where the crankshaft sensor is on my clio 1.2 grande 1999?
have read that this may be the cause of the car not starting now and again and is easy and cheap to replace but........ I dont know what or where it is .
Also is it this that is the problem? Immoboliser light extinguishes every time key is turned so dont think there is any problems there and have changed battery in key fob and central locking works fine.
Any help please????

My Clio Expression sometimes has a problem with starting if the steering wheel is anything but straight, it is easily corrected by turning the wheel slightly (while locked) in both directions, the car then starts.
Is this the same thing?
it's irritating and if there is a quick fix I'd love to know it.

Well clio is fixed!!
Thought i would update this page and pass on the knowledge i have gained so any other people unfortunate to own a clio that wont start know what to do.
Basically dont rely on friends who are friends with a mechanic as they told me the immoboliser was faulty............ if the flashing red light goes out on the dash once the key is turned then all is well with your immoboliser!
i tried to find out where the crankkshaft sensor was so i could replace it but no one could help me! so gave the car to a garage who charge £40 per hour in the hope that the proffesionals could end my misery.
i picked the car up and was told that the read out had said fault with TDC sensor (TDC= Top dead centre sensor) which i assume can also be called a crankshft sensor as the explanation of this device on wilkipedia is that this device senses when the crank shaft is at its highest position in the cylinder and therefore sends a signal to the spark plugs to spark and ignite the air fuel mixture thus starting the engine.
This explains my symptoms,..... starter motor turning but engine not firing all because this stupid sensor was not sensing when the correct time to spark was!!!!!!!! GRRRRRR.
The garage had already assumed that i wanted the car repaired and had already fitted a new TDC Sensor on my behalf, (which yes i would have had any way) even though i had not asked for it!!!! LOL
They said that it "SEEMED" to correct the problem of poor starting. Great i thought, it starts now for them but come tommorrow when i need the car ill be stranded again.
BUT NO, the problem has been resolved, touch wood, since i had it repaired it has started first time every time within 1/8 of a second!!!!!
From my research on tinternet the sensor is somewhere to the left of the engine if you look from the front but another says it is on the bell housing the flywheel which i only assume is on the right???? , personnaly i have not lifted the bonnet as of yet to have a look. if i find out anything will post again!!!!!!
Oh and the cost........ at german swedish and french car parts the TDC sensor is £17.50.
My garage bill...... £93!! Pricey BUT did not have hassle of having to do it myself, Just cant eat out for the rest of the month now!!!!! LOL

P.S one last little bit of advice if your thinking of buying a Renault...............

Hi,
I had the same problem on a 2000 1.2 Clio Grande. The way I fixed it (for free) was to simply disconnect the crank shaft sensor plug then reconnect, now it works fine. If it's too tight to disconnect then just wiggle it loose and push it back in. Its apparently a very common problem and occurs on many Renault models of the era. Its located on the right side of the engine (if you're standing in front of the car facing it).
