so i have my 02 z28 that likes to go fast... there's so many radar detectors on the market i don't know which to choose. there's a lot of them on ebay for around $100. any suggestions on what features to look for, brands, specific detectors etc.?

Belltronics are some of the best ones out.

valentine v1 is the only radar detector as far as I'm concerned. well worth the entry cost but your best bet for avoiding a ticket is still to pay attention and not speed excessively

Passport or Beltronics is what I always hear about.

yeah i have the passport by escort..the new one that droped in july is off the chain!! it shos your speed, gives u info on new detections, and remembers all the false alarm spots u drive in..it has built in gps so it remembers where the false alarms are at...i havent got it yet but i plan on it!

So what happens if a cop sets up radar in a false alarm spot? lol.

it will pick up the difference in signal and go off..u should look it up and read about the new passport, its pretty bad ass for a radar detector. the only ticket i ever got with mines was when i was sleepy as hell and it was going off and my music was up high...(2 10's) so i didnt hear it warning me..and by time i noticed it was going off, i noticed the state trooper sitting on the side of the road lol. so it was my fault. there is no 100% way to beat a ticket except for not speeding! but i will say it payed for itself 30 times fold! saved my ass from more tickets than one could think

I think philly rs is talking about the Passport 9500i. Great unit I used for the first time on a trip from Chicago to Bristol, TN and back in August. It was remarkably quite but when it went off, that was a trooper waiting on the side or coming towards me. Can higly recommend this unit if you can stomarch the cost of $450,-

good luck

something more in the range of 100-200 is what i'm thinking. i know i won't be getting the best out but i just need something that for the money is a good deal.

the cobra two..wal mart..its pretty damn good for that damn price!!! it works almost as good as the passport..one of the guys in my club uses that because he refuses to pay 350 for a passport...and yes the new one is 450 lol.... i dont have it yet but we are autorized dealers for this unit. i will be getting one by xmas... they also make a unit and its alot..i think 800?? but it doesnt go in the window, its a bunch of sinsors built into the bumpers...front and rear...its sweet!!! the screen it about the size of a xm radio screen..its awsome...one of the docs i work with that i hang with has one in his 2007 porsh.... he said the damn thing came with it!! but we sell that one as well

Professional advice. Don't waste your money. There is more than one way to determine your speed.

I wouldn't count on a radar detector to keep you from getting a ticket but they are nice once in a while and could save a couple of tickets but I like mine just to know when I have been clocked.

i got a whistler from walmart a few years back for about $50 and it has never let me down. did anyone see the newer mythbusters? they determined u can beat the photo radar if you go faster than 240mph  . 6 i got a question for ya, do those portable trailers that show your speed have cameras in them? my detector went off about 1/2 mile before i got to one.

You know, honestly I don't know. I don't think so because I have passed some of those flying...

i didnt think so either. i really see no point in them. people dont slow down for them, some even speed up.

nope..they dont..i would have been locked up looooong ago if they ddi...i see one of those and i punch it to see how fast i can get clocked at lmao...i thought about that 2day when i saw one and figured if they were to ever do that it would be so easy to get away with it...with all the plate covers they have out now..

Just rember nothing can protect you from:
~Pulse radar
or
~Laser mark

Speed monitoring methods

Pulse - A large hi-res sound is pitched that will only bounce back when a vehicle travles fast enough (speeding) to bounce it back >>If your hit by a Pulse, your screwed! Unhook your detector and hide it somewhere. Next see if you cant pull off somewhere {like a parkinglot or a Mcdonalds} You are immune to cop action if you get out of your car before he flashes his lights at you.<<

Laser Mark - A laser strikes its target, and instantly transmits the speed back, even detectors that are able of detecting this cannot save you...

ok...so how bout those radar scramblers. i know they're illegal in most states but...do they work?

Not to bring back a 2-month old thread, but the holidays are coming up and I have been looking into radar detectors. I honestly don't know what I should look for. All I know is I don't want one for more than $200-$250 and there are some good deals out there. I just don't want to get an out-dated model. I know in this game, the latest one is the way to go. I was on buy.com and found a Rocky Mountain C450 that seemed pretty good and stuff. It was a radar/laser detector and scrambler. What are some of the new releases out there? Because most of them say they are the newest.

There was a court case a while back... judge said if the police want to monitor the public using inconspicuous methods, then the public has every right to minotr the police in the same manner... guy won case re having radar detector / jammer.

I'd like to have one hidden in my maro, get pulled over and say.." What are you talking about? I don't have anything like that! Besides you didn't actually clock me for speeding so wtf?" Then if they says omething about not being able to have detectors or jammer's I'd be like, "you don't see one do you?" and then if the actually find it, I'd be like "why don't you refer to court case (whatever it was) and see if you'd like to waste your day fighting this one?"

Or you could just not speed.

I did watch a guy once, driving in front of me on 95, cop pulled inbetween us, clicked him, and pulled him over for having a detector. Guy wasn't even speeding for like 20 miles, lmao. Poor bastard.

i agree 100%, although i thought all jamers/scrablers were illegal. all of them are illegal in DC and Virginia though.

I thought about a scrambler, but I just got a basic Beltronics... They make great radar detectors that perform awesome. Doesn't cost near as much as others too...

My g/f is getting me a radar detector for Christmas. I've been wanting one for awhile, but was waiting for the car to be up and running. I'm looking at either the Bel Vector 940 or 955 (or is it 65?). Both under $200 and seem like great deals. Anyone know about these?

lol...u guys are funny..who said if u get out the car b4 the cop puts on his lights they cant do anything..lol wrong....see how far u get into mickey dees, im sure u will be the next guy getting tazed on cnn lmao....thats a myth. they can and will ask u to step back to your car. and if u dont then thats your ass mr postmaaaan!! and its sucks to live in va and dc, but in fl u can have all that shit! and escort just came out with that new devise that hooks up to your passport that sends a false 10mph less reading back on a laser punch. a few guys in my club are going in on a group purchase on this thing since our shop is a passport dealer....but that one they build that goes in your bumpers is the best one yet! that one is supposed to be so bad assed that if u get a ticket they vowed to pay it!!

I am running the 940 and it is a great radar detector. Although I am wondering how much better the 955 could be for the price difference... The 940 seems to be good enough for out in the country and even when I'm driving around in the cities...

I've had a few cheap detectors then finally spent the insane price for the V1. You get what you pay for. The only ones i would consider now are the V1 and the new passport i've heard alot of good things about. My V1 has saved me MANY times, however like has been said, if it says Laser, unless you got really lucky and caught a freak bounce then you're screwed. As far as jammers, laser jammers are legal depending on the state of course because the laser frequency is not federally protected like the other bands used. Get a good radar detector and use common sense and you'll be fine. They're not a "sure thing" in avoiding tickets but any advantage I can have I'll take :)

I always wondered what would happen if a cop pulled you over and walked up to your car and you had like 100's of sticks of dynamite all over the place and a lit cigarette hanging loosely on you lip...

Would he run away or call for backup?

(15 years ago I woulda had some beers and tried to find out, now I'm too lazy.)
