My 95 Avalon needs a new CV half shaft. $180 parts plus $200 labor. Checking I can get a rebult CV half shaft for $70. Is this a job for a DIYer or does it require special tools and technical knowledge. Also need to change the front bearing.
Any advice.
Thanks

I guess the no response, means go ahead and pay the professional. Right?

Not sure about the '95, but swapping out a CV half-shaft is not that difficult...it all depends on your level of ability. You need some basic mechanic tools to do the job, but the most important is probably a factory service manual. The links at the top of the forum say you can download the FSM for free, though I've not done this and don't know the legality of it. But for $10 you can go to the toyota site and get 24 hr access to the FSM and can download all or part of the manual. Here's a link to that source which is for LCs, but works for any toyota:

... or go to the top of the Camry forum and download the manual for a 95 Camry. They are going to be close.

I bit the bullet and had it repaired only to have it progress from replacing the CV halfshaft to a replacement of the rack also. Car runs and dives great, hopefully good for another 250K.
