01 taurus trans suddenly quit

I was driving down a rural highway at 50-55 mph. A truck in front of me (500+ yards) slowed to turn into a driveway. I too slowed to about 30 mph until he completed his turn. At this point I pressed down on the gas and nothing happened. It was just like it was in neutral. We towed it home and hooked it up to the computer. It appears the Trans pump is out. No fluid flowing at all. After 20+ minutes of running the Trans temp was a whopping 65 deg (air temp +). Cracked a line to the rad and just drips. It is not moving any fuild. There was absolutely no warning, no signs, or indications of potential trouble. It didn’t make any noises (still doesn’t) nor act up at all, just flat quit.
My question is there something electrical that could prevent the pump from working or a pressure relief valve that I can check before pulling out the engine and Trans?:banghead: I pulled the pan. Nothing loose, no metal, no sludge, and pickup/filter housing right where it should be and plenty of fluid…..

Give us some maintenance history, year and mileage and we'll go from there. 165F is not to hot for tranny fluid. Useful info here: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm
It's not working and by continuing to run it you could be doing serious damage to 'hard parts' in the tranny which will mean replacing expensive hard parts and your rebuild will cost more. First drop the traqnny pan and see if there are metal filings on the filter. When was the last time the filter was cleaner or replaced and new fluid?

The transmission oil pump is mounted on the valve body and driven by a shaft from the torque converter. If the problem is no or low oil pressure, the pump could be damaged, the shaft could be damaged or broken, the EPC solenoid could be defective, or the pressure regulator valve could be damaged.
What transmission do you have (AX4S or AX4N)? How many miles on the car? When was trans oil last changed?
I can send you some parts breakdown diagrams so you can see the relationship of parts. PM with your email address if you want them. They are in PDF format.

Good question. I am not sure. Everthing I read says it should be an AX4S or AX4N. "AXOD Metric" is stamped in the pan. But all the books say this trans wasn't used after the mid to late 90's. The little yellow tag on top of the bell housing has something like A3Z? (I think there was a fouth digit but will have to check for sure). It has a vin code U, 3.0 v6 and is the column shift SES sedan.
I would like to see the PDF. I'll see if I can figure out how to sent you a private message.
Thanks

The AX4S is the newer version of the AXOD-E. I'll send you the PDF.

In this case it doesn't matter what tranny you have because it is dead and in need of repair. DUH. To further reenfoce that theory, if you don't know when the fluid was last changed then I seriously doubt you could fix it. Me niether and I'd have to take it to a shop. One more time: First order of business: Drop the tranny pan and look see what kind of foreign material or metal filings is on the filter. IF you don't see any clean the valve body and put new Mercon V fluid in and see if it goes. You know it won't go so don't run the engine anymore until you find out what's wrong.
