Hi, I've had so many issues my 2000 JXi Convert. I went and bought the book. Right now there is a $10 rebate on them at Pep Boys.

Book says: The fuel filter should be replaced every 60,000 miles or 48 months. They repeatedly warn against smoking, etc. around fuel : )

1. The in-line fuel filter mounts to the frame above the rear of the fuel tank, near the filler neck.

2. Remove the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure.

3. Perform the fuel pressure relief procedure by removing the fuel pump relay in the relay/fuse center in the engine compartment. Start the car and allow it to run until it stops. This should only take a few seconds. Crank the engine again, to ensure the fuel presure is completely relieved. Disconnect the battery cable from the remote ground terminal. Always lay a shop towel over any fuel connection that is to be spearated to absorbe the residual fuel that will leak out.

When you are finished working ont he fuel system, install the fuel pump relay into the relay/fuse center.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the ground stud onthe left shock tower.

5. Remove the rear seat. Locate the fuel pump wiring harness 4 pin connectore and disconnect it from the wiring harness. Follow the fuel pump wiring to the grommet at the base of the rear seat. Tie a length of string to the fuel pump wiring harness and secure the other end somewhere in the trunk (allows easy retireval of harness). Push the grommet through the floorpan and feed the wiring and 4 pin connector through the hole.

6. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.

7. Position an approved gasoline container under the fuel tank drain plug. Make sure container is big enough to hold all the fuel and to use a funnel if needed. (In other words, have an empty gas tank.) Remove drain plug and drain fuel.

8. After fuel has drained, reinstall the drain plug and tighten securely.

9. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack. Place a piece of wood between the jack head and the tank to protect the tank.

10. Remove the drivers side fuel tank strap (long strap).

11. Loosen but do not remove the passenger side fuel tank strap so the fuel tank filler neck just touches the rear suspension crossmember. Do not let the weight of the fuel tank rest on the filler neck! Support it with the jack at all times.

12. Label and disconnect the quick-connect fuel line fittings connecting the fuel filter to the fuel system.

13. Detach the fuel filter from its mounting and remove it from the vehicle.

Installation is the reverse.

Connect the fuel line quick connect fittings and verify they are securily asembled by trying to pull them apart.

Tighten the fuel tank strap bolts to the torque 16.

Pressurize the system and check for leaks.

Good luck! I hope this gives you some idea on how to proceed.

Thanks! What a process, although now I've ruled that out.
