i have a 99 GT mustang, over the last 6 months i've been working on it to fix small problems, replace all the spark plugs, fuel filter, oil and oilfilter, and then it started blowing codes ( servie engine light ) i put in some fuel injector cleaner after i figured out the code was a Missfire, then i figured out it was the Coil Pack that needed replaced, after that it would run for a week or two and i'd need to replace a diff coil pack... after replacing 3 coilpacks it was running perfectly then out of no where i hear this loud sorta backfire type sound, my friends i was with said they thought the tire blew but it wasnt the tire at all i could tell that, it proceeded to Pop non stop even when i was idle and in Nuetral and if i gave it gas it would be even worst but it still ran, i dont drive it of course out of fear of not knowing the problem but everyone i have look at it says they cant see or tell what it is or where the sound it coming from even, some say it sounds like an Exhaust problem or even a bad water pump but i'll be honest i am clueless i can only do minor maintnance stuff i'm blind to whats wrong at this point, if anyone could help i'm too poor to send it in anywhere and i'm out of Towing on my AAA card anyways :banghead:

Check the plug wires. Are you sure they are on right ?

You can have it scanned for codes again at some Advance auto and Autozone parts stores. If it's running that bad, then there should be a code indicating where to look.
Some possibles might be:
ignition module
plug wire gone bad/disconnected
EGR
MAF
Hope this helps.

usually when a car backfires out of the intake it indicates a lean condition, popping out of the exhaust usually means rich.incorrect timing-when the plug fires with the exhaust valve open-can also cause it.incorrect timing could be wires out of sequence-Ive worked for ford since 1987 at the kentucky truck plant and we constantly play tricks on each other including switching plug wires on each others cars.it could also be a problem with the timing sensors ie..crank sensor.good luck
