I have a 2002 Grand Am and the Service Engine Soon / ABS / Trac Off lights come on when I shift from reverse to drive occasionally. It seems random and doesn't happen every time. I can turn my car off then back on and put it in drive and the lights don't come on. I read in the manual and it said one of the lights was aimed at tire slippage? So could that mean when I hit the gas in drive after rolling back in reverse it is slipping and messing with the lights or is that wrong or what? Any help on what this could mean or even what these lights mean would help me out a bunch! Thanks in advance!

well the lights you speak of should be service vehicle soon, abs and trac off. Pretty much your car's ABS and Traction control system have shut down due to a problem. You should have the car scanned with an obd2 scan tool that also scans abs codes. Some possibilities are one of the abs sensors are either going bad, or have a bad connection. Also One of your wheel bearings could be starting to go out and need to be replaced. This is a pretty common occurance on these model years g/a's.

Ok that doesn't sound too bad. How much does it cost to get it scanned and if the wheel bearings were bad how bad is that? Is there a way to check the connection if it is bad? And any idea cost on the wheel bearings? Thanks again!

cost for scanning all depends on the place... Some places do it for free ( very few) and it can cost up to $150.00+/- to have it scanned. A bad wheel bearing isn't that bad.... but should be fixed sooner then later. for a wheel bearing you are looking at a rough cost of $250.00... it could be more or less depends on where you go. To check the connection... I'm not 100% sure on this... but I know there are plenty of others with more experience with this area.

I have had the same problem...with the ABS lights, trac off, and service vehicle soon light....it could be your wheel bearings...you need to have that checked right away...when those lights popped on for me...that was what the problem was..now the lights no longer show.

yea that generaly means that you have a wheel bearing going bad....or a wheel speed sensor inside the wheel bearing.jack the car up and try to move the tires back and worth, if the wheel moves then that bearing is bad. i had a speed sensor go out in mine though and the bearing was fine...i kept it for a spare!

Yeah these bearings/wheel speed sensors are a bad design IMO.
The best ones are american made, chinese ones are crap!
Never use an impact air tool on them either or it'll damage the WSS circiut.

This is not the only thing that would trip these lights on the ICP, any sort of ABS errors would cause the same.
Thats why you need to have it scanned to find out whats going wong. Just my :2cents:
