05S28 Recall

Ok guys. I called the Ford dealer today and inquired about the recall for the cruise module on my 96 Crown Vic. Here's what they said. Parts will be avaliavle in December. Part is a fused wiring harness. Sounded like a fusable link to me. Dealer said that's what the new harness will consist of. As for the disconnect they told me to unplug the connector on the master cylinder. The one where you tap the brakes ant it shuts the cruise off. I looked and there was a psi sensor on the outboard side of the master cylinder. I disconnected it so I should be good, assuming that the service guy wasn't a complete idiot. If it's only a fusable link, us guys that like our cruise controll can fix this fairly easily. Has any one else heard a different story on this?

Sorry for the posting on the Crown Vic I'm sure it's relevant to the Town Cars since they are closely related. My Curent 91 TC is too old to fall in to the recall. :2cents:

The parts "kit" is that harness you mentioned, a zip-tie, and a new switch.

The dealers have been adding just the harness and pocketing the switch. I plan on changing my own cause I want the new switch installed too.

In my mind, it's been proven that the switch eventually fails, and not replacing it is just a half-ass'd way to fix this problem.
After they add the harness, it's signed off as "recall work completed"....

Some folks are adding a bit of brake fluid to the outside of switch and connector, the dealer sees that "leaking switch" and replaces the switch too rather than keeping it.

The real problem however is, the switch leaks internally where fluid gets into the switch contacts, causing a short. Shorted wires melt, car, garage and house burns.

Here's a shot of the kit:

I received a recall for my 94 TC and it doesnt have the same set up.

There is nothing electrical on my master cylinder but some thing on the cap

Which my guess would be for a low fluid signal. On the cruise conrtrol itself

there is a flat module on top with a half dozen wires coming from it.

I'm thinking this thing has been a pain for Ford for a while and there have

been some changes made to try and fix it.

Anyone hear about the older models with a different set up?

Thanks and good luck

Yes, your's is (I've heard) down lower near the frame where brake lines come together at a junction block?? I haven't looked at your FSM to say it this rumor is true.

I hear that some are a real bitch to get at...

On my 93 TCs there a junction block just as the frame rail kicks up on the drivers side. Two lines go in to the block each side. Yes it is a pain to get to, more so geting the brake line fittings loose. But I can see the dealer not replacing that psi sensor, insist that they do it. I will want the new switch as well, I have plenty of used ones. Would be nice to have some new parts around here for a change and not junk yard parts ha ha.

i can understand how they might leak as they get pressure everytime the brake gets pushed. Being and on off switch I cant see how brake fluid in the connector could create an arc across to the easiest path the other terminal.

If it can leak it will on mine. That side had the wheel well flap off with prevous owner and brake lines are pretty rusty. For a while there had been water streaming up into the engine compartment.

Have any photos surfaced of the burned out harnesses?

Good Luck
