96 Toyota Corolla Fuel Problem

I have a 96 toyota corolla that will not start. I suspect fuel pump issues. I have checked everything that the Haynes Manual said to check and all checks OK, however I do dot hear the pump whirl when I turn the key on. Is there any way to hot wire the pump to check it out. I need to know if it is the pump or something the relay system. I would appreciate any help

I have a 96 Corolla and you can't hear the fuel pump and it runs just fine. You could loosen the inlet line to the fuel filter and turn the ingintion on and see if the fuel pump will pump some gasoline into a container. Fuel filter is on firewall drivers side.

Yeah, just check the fuel pressure. Should be a nipple on the fuel line...just get a fuel pressure gauge or even a tire pressure gauge...push down on the nipple thingy and if fuel comes out then it may not be the fuel pump...the fuel pump gauge will give you the best reading though...my Tahoe always has a fuel pump issue it seems like...lol

The fuel pump also has a fuse and a relay that are worth checking.

You may also need to check for spark also.

I'm not sure if the '96 has a DLC (underhood), but you can check for power to the pump there.

* Fuel pumps often become intermittent before they die -- How did your issue arise? Did you get any warnings before your present no-start condition?

I am not sure how the issue arose. I got the car as a "mechanics special" from a family member who didn't want to mess with it anymore. No other info other than it just died. The relays are good. and get power to them. When checking according to the Chilton's manuel the relays are putting power out. The book does not show a fuse. Does anyone know if there is a fuse for this system? I'm just trying to eliminate all other possabilities before dropping almost $200 on a new fuel pump.

If the fuel pump is really dead, you gotta do it. There is a fuse (any fuse involving "EFI") and relay -- Unfortunately, the ignition, PCM and fuel system fuses, fusible links, and relays need to be checked because they all work together and can all cause the "no start" issue.

a down and dirty test would be to spray gasoline into the throttle body while you try to start it, if it runs then dies, you have spark, spend the $200. Likewise if the smell of gas arises when you try to start the car, the ignition system is where you should be looking.
