Hows it goin,

So here's the deal. About a month ago I bought a 93 eagle talon tsi with the work. Ill spare you the boring details, but basically about five days after i bought it i had a hole in one of the pistons. Diagnostically boring, but the question is, what parts do I need to change all four pistons, and do you know of any tricks to add to the cars power. As you can tell I know a little about engines, but once you start to dig that deep I start to lose it.

Thanks alot,
Joel

So you got a hole in the piston eh ? Why do you think you got one and if you rebuild it, wouldnt it happen again. Also I see no mods except this. Who tunned the car, does it have a wideband, what turbo and boost are you running, what injectors. Car running lean .. rich. Give us all the mods. Your sig says :Live From The Great State of Hockey .... which doesnht help me much. There are OEM rebuildkits and then performance rebuild kits. What is your budget, what is your power goal ? And most important who will be doing the work ? And I saw you want more power the easy way, just buy the T4 Monster turbo for $250 of ebay and its rated for 700whp, put a intake and start flying.

A hole in the piston is because of the piston melting from extremely high combustion chamber temperatures. How does this happen? Running really lean and knocking like crazy. Did you just throw in a boost controller, crank that shit up, and start wanking on it? Or was it the person before you? This is a perfect example of why a person needs to do a LOT of research before they start modding a car.

As for what its going to cost, thats entirely dependant on how bad you fucked the motor up when doing that. You are for sure going to need new pistons, rings, bearings, the normal machining, gaskets, head studs, etc. I have never been into a motor that was abused that badly, but I think its totally feasible that the motor is or is almost completely junk.

As for the power, you need to do a lot of reading before you should be worried about that.

After thought: Your sig says you are in the hockey state... and if thats not Minnesota then you are not in the hockey state :p. Where about in MN are you?

So, I bought an Eagle Talon 93 about a month ago. The guy that I bought it from spent a ton of money and time into this car. Traditionally, it was a standard Talon 2.0l non-turbo automatic. Now its a 2.0l turbo 5-speed. Only one problem, when he added the turbo he did all of the necessary performance swaps except the stock cast pistons. So sure enough, a small hole was blown through one of the pistons about a week after purchase. My question is if anyone could help me out with a list of part that I would need to buy to change the pistons. My brother and I can take car of most performance swaps untill you start to dig deep into the engine so your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks alot,
Joel

P.s. If you have any more ideas for performance swaps while the engine is torn apart that would be awesome also.

That is a kit I just found on ebay. Just wondering if you guys would approve.

Thanks

Do you want to stroke it? You should be able to get forged rods and pistons for around 800. Im not sure on the difference between the 4g63nt and the 4g63t but make sure you get the right set if they are different. Also you might want to figure out why your stock piston has a hole in it. They even though they aren't that strong they usally fail from excessive heat or detonation. Make sure you fix this before you put all new internals in it.

So are you saying that this set just isnt the one? Ive searched for individual parts on summit racing and it looks to be about 450 for forged pistons and another 400 or so for the rods. Do you think that buying the crank shaft is uneccesary?

P.S. The stock piston had a hole from overboost, and I have already taken care of it and installed an intercooler.

No you dont need the crank unless your making it a stroker.

Stock turbo cranks are rated for around 700hp...

You also dont need two threads on the same subject particularly in the wrong subforum. (I merged them)

The NT and turbo pistons are different, the difference lies in the compression ratio and also the fact that the NT pistons were not designed to put up with the extra shit the turbo ones are. Be sure to get turbo pistons.

Sorry about the double post thing. It was an error, I posted it in the morning and when I checked it at about 11 it wasn't there, and know I understand why...But the reason I have no specs for you is because, like I said, I have owned the car for less than a month and have only driven it for about 4 or 5 days. So the crank is uneccesary but the pistons will do? And from some of the snide comments towards my moding abilities, which have nothing to do to with this car, I understand I need to play around with the turbo boost and the fuel. Any help there? The reason I have no details is I made this account early this morning and havn't had time. I will try and catch up.

Thanks again,
Joel

What are you using to tune the car with? You should keep boost around 8psi or so to make sure you have the car tuned pretty good then slowly turn it up more.

I will do that. Im sure the guy that I bought it from has the boost set way too high. One more question for this thread, do you know the standard bore size for these engines? Just need to know how much to order. If not it's no big deal to take it into NAPA.

So you have a 4g63nt block. So was the block ever bored or its never been rebuilded. What pistons and rods you have in there. If I was you, I would get a turbo block and buy some forged pistons and rods and put them in. Since you have the engine out its not that hard.

Thor06

NT and turbo blocks are the same except that the turbo has oil squirters whereas the NT doesnt. Its debated whether you really need them or not anyway, just stick with the NT block if I were you. I think the cranks are the same as well, just nab yourself some turbo rods and pistons (stock 1g rods can be had for like <$50 and they are plenty good), some topline pistons ($200), ACL or Clevite or King bearings, etc and let 'er buck.

You know where to find pistons that cheap? Cheapest I can find is around 450. Also, should I grab some pistons from the local talon parts car? Or should I invest in some shiny ones?

Typo....I meant to say should I grab some rods from the parts car...not pistons lol

Yeah, those rods should be ok, but just to make sure I would have someone look at them for ya. I wouldnt get the shiney forged pistons unless you are Heres a link (http://www.slowboyracing.com/estore/home.php?cat=560).

450 for what kind of pistons? IRRC I paid $450 for my forged JE pistons. So stockers definately should be cheaper.

Yea that 450 statement was for forged not stockers. My car had stock in it and i put a hole thru one of the pistons. I know the guy i bought it from had it way over boosted and I took care of that. Thing is do you guys think id be safe with stockers now that the boost is lower? It just seems to me going for some forged pistons is just excessive. And I dont need to over bore, the continuity of the cylinders is fine.

SilvrEclipse

Your factory pistons aren't the same ones that come in the turbo motor. With you putting turbo pistons in there they will be stronger and will be able to handle a lot more boost.

Thor06
09-24-2007, 02:40 PM
Most of your problem was a shitty tune, high compression ratio, and weaker pistons. I know a guy from this area that had 530whp daily on his stock 6 bolt bottom end and I believe the record is like 585whp. So yes, if you do it right the stock pistons will be fine.

If you are going for the extreme budget build. I would do what all the other people are saying here. Just get stock, OEM turbo pistons. They are good for 400 ponies or so, if you have some spare cash, invest it into better pistons and rods.

Hey thor this might sound a little stupid...but is that link you sent me 199 for 2 pistons or the whole set?

Thanks

Hey thor I was just scanning thru the older posts on this thread and noticed that you had asked me where in Minnesota I'm located. Sorry its so late lol, but I live in champlin, Northwest suburbs south of Anoka
