1985 Celica

Well, I just got my first car. Last week i turned 15 and my dad knows this guy who needed to sell his 1985 Celica. So we bought it for $50 CANADIAN!!!!!!!. ANyways. Every thing is stock so iam wondering what i should start with. It has a lot of rust and some dents but we are gonna get new fenders for it. WHat shall we start with after that? Give me your opinions on what looks good and what doesnt or should i just leave it as is and work on the engine????

well man it's ur car...so what you do is up to you...thing is....it's a bitch to find parts for an older celica...i know because I have one....all i've been able to find is a Kevlar Clutch, and NoS...if i find anything ill let you know....but if you find something let me know please

i have an 85 celica too. first thing you should do is get exhaust hedders. and take off the goddamn catalytic converter. then take off your air filter cover...its useless. do u have the air conditioner compressor still hooked up? if not, hang your air filter down there. makeshift cold air intake. thats my setup and i beat an old iroc in a drag race last weekend

theres lots of performance for that celica, you just gotta look for parts for old pickup trucks. the motor is the 22re, which is the fuelinjected 2.2 liter SOHC. ive seen turbo kits, headers, performance rebuild kits, all sorts of good stuff for them. you can make that car insane if you are resourceful about finding parts.

au contraer, my friend. the 22RE (which i have) is the 2.4L DOHC fuel injected. thee 22R was the 2.2L SOHC carbureted.

The 22R and the 22RE are both 2.4L SOHC engines. The only difference is the 22R is carbureted and the 22RE has Multi-Port Fuel Injection. The 2.2L SOHC carbureted engine you are thinking of is the 20R. Also available in 1985-1988 Pick-up and 4Runners was a turbocharged version, the 22RTE. If you would do some research you would find lots of information on this car. Instead of wasting building a 22R you could swap in a 1G-GTE like I did, a 3S-GTE from an MR-2 (lots of fabrication though), a 3T-GTE from a Japanese Celica of the same year, a !JZ-GTE, or even the 2JZ-GTE from a newer Supra (requires moving the firewall back). Toysport has a 2JZ-GTE in one of thier older Celica's. Anyway some good information can be found at the following sites:

ive been on this site for a whole 5minutes and read 2 posts of yours. everyone was full of false statements. heres an idea. LOOK UNDER YOUR HOOD. the 22R is SOHC. and is 2.4L. the 20R is SOHC and is 2.2L. im not trying to flame but educate yourself before you give others the wrong facts.

First of all exhaust headers will do nothing for the car, if it is stock. The stock headers are enough to let all the exhaust the engine can make out of the car. An 1985 Celica has a 22RE in it. Which by the way is a 2.4L SOHC, not a 2.2. First thing I would do if I where you is replace the air box with an open element air filter. After that maybe look at bigger injectors, and program the ECU to shoot more fuel into the engine. Cold Air Intake is a good idea, but it has to be ran outside the car, if you keep it in the engine bay, it is only cold for a few minutes, then the engine heats the bay up, and you lose your cold air. Also look at light weight parts. For every 100 pounds you take off the car, you will gain .01 seconds on your 1/4 time. Which isn't hardly anything for all the work it is to lose 100 lbs, and how it can destroy the looks of the car. Look for things like light weight flywheels, clutches etc... the lighter it weighs, the less friction, the more power.

Dude I have an 85 Celica GT-S for a while now and man, if you really really really...I mean really want to built it up and you know you have a lot "G"s(money), Then man I've got two words for you "LC ENGINEERING". These guys do nothing, but sit around all day building up highly performace parts for 22re. Heck they even got a turbo kit for the 22re and it only cost around $3000. Oh my god you have got to be kidding me.. I have an 86.... ONE YEAR OFF.. Its bad enough trying to find crap for older celicas but these guys mastered the engine just before mine.. okay im sorry im pissed.. I wanna blow up my car now...
