Gas Cap?

I just bought an 87 SS and I am currently stranded at school because I cannot find the gas cap. I wont make it home with the gas I have and I am completley screwed. If someone has an answer fast it would help.

Welcome to AF! Yes edson4433 is correct, your gas cap is located behind your rear license plate. Thank you edson4433 for your quick reply to that member. At first I must have read it wrong and thought the member had lost the cap itself and needed a replacement.(I guess that was my "DUH" moment of the day!):grinyes:

No. You just pull the plate down to reveal the cap( the license plate backing plate is a hinged unit and pulls down,) and unscrew it to place the nozzle from the gas pump into your tank. It's like the plate acts as the gas door like most car have nowadays.

I wonder why this practice stopped? I always thought it was nice to not have a stupid door messing up the body lines. Was it a possible crash safety issue?

I don't know. Maybe it was a design issue, especially with Montes being RWD back then. At least back then it was harder to forget to close your gas door after fueling and drive off down the road with your fuel door open.:icon16:
