Here's one that I did recently completely in Illustrator. It is very time consuming and you should make sure to keep your layers separated as best as possible.
As far as the mouse goes, I use a trackball mouse unless I need a faster shape or brush stroke, then I go to the tablet. This one was done completely with the mouse though.

Well, I don't do tutorials because I don't know how to do them (electronically). I suggest that after you do the sketch (or use an illustration ala Jerri), start with the body outline. I try and do the wheels last, and fit them to the car's size... order doesn't matter significantly because each part of the car I draw is on a layer, which can be arranged in front of, or behind another layer... like a hundred layers of transparencies.
I also use the path to "cut out" the window openings from the body of the car. That allows you to do an interior layer, behind the body layer and it shows through the body layer.
I use a Wacom tablet... I use to use a mouse, but the tablet is so much better.
Good luck in your endeavor. Roboduck

I've done car vectors using Illustrator for quite some time now and here's some of my stuff :

And I have written a tutorial as well, and there you'll find the link for the original .svg source file as well:
